(Lyndon 14)
Sometimes he would go on long trips with friends out West, bumming their way. My father was always so worried. But he always came back with lots to tell. And no money.

Naming
(Dogs 18)
So started the reign of Vica. I believe I really named her. Queen and Princess seemed so worn. One day, when visiting Skip in his shack, I suddenly said, "How about Victoria? She was a queen and it could be a double entendre sort of -- you being victorious in winning us over." "Yes!" said Skip, "yes, and Vica for a call name."

Change-the-bed day
(1980 memoirs)
Ordinary every-day days, I should pull the feather bed straight to make the bed; or if I were late, just pile out and not make it at all. But on Change-the-Bed Day, Cousin Frankie, the darling, would come up, shake the whole thing up fluffy and high and make it all up for me! How could I have let her do so much for me and do so little in return? I cannot answer this except to say I was very busy and she was Kindness itself.

Frankie's bedroom
(1980 memoirs)
Still on this wall, now is the door to her room, open unless she was washing or dressing. It wasn't like a real bedroom at all. She slept on sort of a cot and this was always covered with a dark woven spread of some kind; no pillows ever seen. The wash stand was off to one side, away from the door, and a cane bottom straight chair or two. That was about all. The clothes were always in the deep closet. On both rooms the floor had a thick dark rug.

Lucretia Clapp
(1980 memoirs)
Lucretia Clapp was a big horsey person with an English accent, large boned, well filled out, long black naturally curly hair. The hair is what I have never forgotten because if you stretch the truth a little you could say she never washed it. She parted it in the middle, combed it neatly down on each side where it waved, and wound it into a big bun on top of her head with a comb to hold her back hair up.

Warm pyjamas
(1967 February 27)
Sad to say I was stricken again with this rheumatism I had before, and on top of it have a heavy head cold. ... I haven't been fully dressed since Valentine's Day. I could, but I am warmer and more relaxed in warm pajamas and robe; besides it is easier to go on like this when I alternate work with rest periods. I have help twice a week and my family helps too. Dee lets me know when we are getting oil or groceries and Penelope [cat] gives me lots of love. So I wait for my cold to go away and Spring to come and then I'll be fine.

Eastern Star funeral
(1966 May 28)
The funeral of Mary Speidel's mother ... was an Eastern Star funeral. About seven ladies and one man went up before coffin. Each read something appropriate and placed a sprig of flowers on her coffin. Prayers were said and a song sung. And that was the entire ritual. She had been Worthy Matron and also held offices in the state role.

Hiker
(1994 early January)
Some years ago I had hiking boots like Sally's. I bought them at George's at Fond du Lac and brot them to Ripon, where Tommy and Hiker (Ruth Pilger) and I would sometimes walk to Berlin! [20 miles apart]. Very very tired when I got home. Part of discussion was if we should accept rides. If the road were icy and the way long, I think we would. I think I was the most in need of a ride and so tired.

Way home
(1993 April 28)
Yesterday I was sitting in the doctor's office with several people ... and a girl next to my right spoke. She was washing dishes at the time of Daddy's death, and when no longer needed - so many of us then - someone took her home - a blond nordic type. No one wanted to do it, not knowing her or the way, and I said, "For Heaven's sake, she knows where she lives." Now married with children.

Maid service
(1993 July)
Eva said tonight, "Will I ever get out of this place?" - She had dropped her butter and jelly! I told her to keep quiet about it and go, and she did. Leave it to the maid.

Kerosine
(1993 July 19)
Ron is working on Daddy's alarm clock and came in my room very pleased to say it has been running for an hour. I asked him to work on it because I know it required kerosine to clean it and Ron owns filling sttions.

Excuses
(1993 August)
I am very lonely now for some odd reason. I mentioned it to one of the "bosses" and she said there was nothing she could do for me, and so were many others, and besides she had a lot of work of her own to do. I really laughed - what an answer.

Sunday supper
(1993 August)
About 6 p.m. and I think I'll soon go to bed and read. Warm and inevitable. Sunday supper is usually a sandwich and a cup of soup like bouillion, dish of apricots for salad. About it.

Tam
(1993 February 6)
when asked what I am knitting, I have learned to say hat, as no one knows what a tam is. "What's that?"

Bubble bath
(1993 February 17)
Do you collect anecdotes of Margaret Scott? She was just here telling of a time last night. She has a tub in her bath as I do not. She got a package of Bubble Bath for a gift and put a pickage in, and the water became so slippery she couldn't get out! Then, figuring it was the bubbles, she got rid of them and got out OK.

Helen
(1993 January 25)
Suddenly I have a roommate. This girl ran The Discount Store in RC, also Paramont Picture Studio near Police Station. As I write this, she comes in and says, "Are you going to stay in here all day?" Me: "I may not." Helen: "They are all around the tele in the lobby." Me: "Oh." Later, Helen: "They aren't there any more now." Me: "Oh." Helen: "What are you going to do?" Me: "Have my hair washed" Helen: "Oh."

Creamed
(1993 February 8)
Bill took me to doctor today, and he [the doctor] saw rash on ankle. I took along creams I had, and he said they were just the ticket; no $ for medicine was needed.

Prayer helps
(1992 ?November)
Sometimes I think how useless this all is - it's about time for me to be dying anyway, and I am performing no useful service any more, unless it is prayer.

Junk mail
(1991 September 21)
My desk is piled so high with stuff. Working on it and throwing out a lot of ads etc. Sometimes I lay the mail down and read only the personal - a very bad habit - better to throw some in the waste basket then. Shall try harder.

The bread machine
(1991 March 16)
I am making bread [with her new Bread Machine] and have come into the kitchen, where it smells yeasty and good. About the mixing - the hardest part was the pain of staying on my feet. Next time I'll take a couple of aspirns first. Second, I ran out of flour and had to get a 5# bag out of the very back of lower cupboard, taking all the near things out first. That's done for next time. Then there is a tublular "cup" that comes with the set - one must use for mixing ingredients. It is harder to put flour in than my open cups; but, as Karen said, "where else could you find a measure for 7/8 of a cup?" So true.
