Wrong

(1990 August 16)

Last night I watched a Japanese film called "Family Gathering." It was really good, showing a Japanese family coming a few at a time to our country. ... Then Pres. Rooseveldt signed an order putting all Japanese in prison camps. ... This all made me remember how wrong LL thought this camp was. Just a few years ago, I came across a copy of a letter he had written to Vernon Thompson of RC, then in Congress, asking him to use his influence to free these innocent people.

Trip to NYC

(1990)

Thank you for looking up me and The Woman's Home Companion. Aren't you smart!?! The snap of me is taken at Beaumont Avenue, and I am wearing an apron and hat made from a kit advertised in Woman's Home Companion which I sent for. You know WHC paid all my expenses including travel [to go to NY and be interviewed for an article on her craft work]. It wanted me to have my picture taken and then decided the enclosed was better as it also advertised the set. LL was in Milwaukee when I read the invitation but decided I'd get lost alone in a big city so came with me and paid his own expenses. My impression was that of a clean city. In the morning the sidewalks were all scrubbed in front of stores. Ev ery day. All in good taste.

A little green

(1990 March 16)

I am not having corned beef and cabbage tomorrow as I am alone. I am more apt to when I ask someone over. Must wear a little green tho. It is such a big dish for one.

Not blown away

(1990 March 16)

Yesterday the winds were fierce - 70-75 miles an hour! I was stopped in my tracks on my way to the mail box. What force! I haven't heard of anything blowing down tho - buildings. The river has high foam.

Bad eggs

(1990 March 11)

Suzy came over to tea. Two delinquent teen agers - boys - have been living with her and husband - bad eggs - one a prostitute on the streets. No one had ever cared at all for them. At last they went to a Grandmother, poor thing.

His reverence

(1990 March 11)

Yesterday Deacon C. and I to bring communion to Portia Martin. ... This man thinks nothing of carrying the host in a fob on his belt for days, whereas Father Maier would not speak to me nor permit me to speak to him when he was carrying the host to Portia Martin.

My slaves

(1990 February 8)

Kathy [my school girl] has gone to Madison again to confer with her brother Robert. I don't know just how the conversation started, but I was telling her how I used to have slaves, and one would come in the morning to run up the shades while the other drew my bath. She believed every word. When she looked skeptical, I said, "Certainly it's true. Just think of when Lincoln freed the slaves," and then she believed it.
