Supper [with Frankie] was always laid out in the dining room properly. And how well I remember our discussions! We talked about all our family members, the family tree, New England, Floridy, Ripon, the College years ago, the professors, which ones were ministers of the Gospel and often held the services in the Congregational Church, which was part of Ripon College; we talked about Russia, a lot about religion and beliefs, customs, manners, the neighbors, the "creatures," and of course ourselves.

State of the Union

Last night we went to the Irish movie, "Fighting Prince of Donegal." About a dozen people there, no more. Tonight President Johnston is on TV for 2 1/2 hours and the place may be packed.

Powder plant

Yesterday the Powder Plant at Baraboo exploded and several fire departments called out. $500,000 damage. It was the building making bullets for Viet Nam. Rockets OK. No one knows cause.

Nursery

[A few days before LL's operation] I went to the hospital about 2.... Well, he was tired of being in bed, and I persuaded him to take a long walk to the Nursery to look at the babies. When we arrived at the window, not a child! Quipped he: And this is the population explosion they want us to build a new school for!

Sit-down strike

The UW students have been having a sit-down strike vs. giving out grades for evading draft. Copying Chicago U. It seems to me they would do better to spend time studying, but it is going through channels etc.

Babysitter

I noticed in the paper all the rioting began in Baltimore. Gives one pause to think. Hope by the time you get ready to go there [on your postdoc in August] things will have quieted down. If a question of safety, as long as I am able I will take the baby [Lawrence]. Hope this unnecessary and family can be together and stay together. You will know as time goes on.

TA's on strike

Daddy heard driving in Madison terrible now since bus strike. Cars bumper to bumper take hours to go few blocks. Parking? !! This riot caused a lot of trouble. Every day papers full of opinions - police brutality - student rights - administration power, etcetcetc. Meetings rehashed on the radio for breakfast and on TV evenings. President Harrington interviewed by panel, etc.

Brotherhood

Last night we spent an hour at the Meadows - Ann told about a wild tea she attended to honor a girl from India dressed in a sari (named Maude Murphy!). It was at the height of the Arab-Israeli war. As they sat sipping tea, one large-busted woman folded her arms and took a stand. "Push them into the sea!" she would exclaim. "Drive the Jews into the sea!" Nearly everyone else there knew Ann to be Jewish. One meek soul did say, "I do think, don't you, we should all try to practice brotherhood?" The worst part was the Indian had come here to observe the religious tolerance she had heard America stood for.

What a morning so far. Outside dark and glum and threatening something dire. Inside nearly as bad. The real underlying idea I feel sure is to get everybody up for breakfast to avoid carrying trays. I heard them call (she probably) "Polly, breakfast is ready." - "I'm not coming. I need sleep." - "You have to come and eat, and sleep later." - No response. So along came a kind but immense woman who says, "Polly, you have to get up for breakfast." I said I needed sleep because people were flashing lights in my eyes all night waking me up. She said, "That was Beverly, and Beverly is one of our best workers. It is required by law to check up on each person every ten minutes while sleeping." - PK: ... "About breakfast - I don't care for a large table bearing a tray full of food, but I would eat a dish of oatmeal only." - "That's what you said. But the government requires us to serve each person with the correct number of calories for each meal." - "Really!" - "Yes, it is so." - By this time I had persuaded her to sit over by my desk with window open 6 inches so I could eat without inhaling her perfume, which at last may have been necessary. About 300 pounds, no kidding.

Suddenly we are at war. I always thought of Baghdad as a mysterious Persian city where strange stories came from. I watched a while on CNN and must say all the soldiers were smiling - maybe to the camera.

Carpet war

Are you aware postage is going up? From 25 cents to 29, and on cards from 15 to 19. To pay for the war. I heard a talk this morning calling the shooting "a carpet war" - shooting everything in sight - milk dairies - anything. Then when we get it all shot up, we'll pay for it and put it all back.

Gulf War
People are having quiet protest walks against the war. The other day there was one here from the Court House to the Library. I suppose Bush thinks he is doing the right thing, but it is a very sad thing he is doing. Oher nations stand by, safe.

Last night I watched a Japanese film called "Family Gathering." It was really good, showing a Japanese family coming a few at a time to our country. ... Then Pres. Rooseveldt signed an order putting all Japanese in prison camps. ... This all made me remember how wrong LL thought this camp was. Just a few years ago, I came across a copy of a letter he had written to Vernon Thompson of RC, then in Congress, asking him to use his influence to free these innocent people.

Poachers

You like to get into disputes and too bad you aren't here, as the Chippewa Nation has not stayed on the Reservation and has gone spear-fishing in other lakes, thus upsetting people who earn their living from Tourism. People won't come fish if the lakes are all fished out. I have seen on TV the spear fishing at night, and I don't see how the Indians can eat all that fish, but I bet they sell them. Of course I am on the side of the Indians; the resort owners are disgusted because Madison doesn't deal with it once for all. The Governor has spoken of getting out the militia.

Reports, reports

Jan looked very tired and is so very weary from going to fool meetings all over the state and making reports on computer sitting days at a time at it. She would rather be doing some good working with the kids and helping the teachers than that. And always these mean articles in the paper saying the teaching is poor and the kids know nothing. The state asks for these reports, and if they are not forthcoming, they will take away the part - the big part - of the teachers' pay. So they write the reports and forget the kids, I guess. Think I'd answer these articles in the papers.
