Last night we went to the Irish movie, "Fighting Prince of Donegal." About a dozen people there, no more. Tonight President Johnston is on TV for 2 1/2 hours and the place may be packed.

Remote
(1966 July 4)
[Mary Margaret, at RC hospital for tonsillectomy] has a wonderful corner room (#325) - the Housner Room - complete with TV high over the dresser mirror. The first thing she did as we waited for nurse to come in was to snoop in all the dresser drawers. In the top dresser drawer she immediately pulled out a gadget and started snapping it. She said, "Gee - I never saw one of these before. It must be remote control." It was, and the Picture showed on The Box. I was sorry it didn't operate something else just to teach her a lesson.

A busy morning

Must watch TV with Daddy. We have a new lounge-sleeper which is an Early American davenport by day and sleeps 2 at night. Upstairs. Now I can stretch out if I am watching a long movie. We had another beautiful elm in front cut down the same day Mike Meadows brot the sofa. First the crew to cut the tree. Then the city crew to haul it away. Meadows here an hour - couldn't get the sofa upstairs. All the time Betty here vacuuming and cleaning, and phone ringing. Quite a busy morning.

WRCO (radio station) has consented to let the College have the air Sunday nights, and they had a big meeting, and MM is temporary chairman. She says who would leave Ed Sullivan and Smothers Brothers for them. However----

We watched a new TV show called "Laugh-in" (Saturday nite). Try to see it - very fast jokes and good. Those buttons were everywhere: Thop Lithping. Lady Godiva wears jockey shorts. Down with mini skirts. Goliath was stoned.

The Shiek

Did I say one night I saw "The Shiek" with Rudolph Valentino? When in high school, I and MICE [her three friends] sat in a row and watched this. I've always wished to see it again. Not so enthralled this time. He was overwhelming then. Those big eyes.

Jeeves

Sunday night I waited for Jeeves, and it was 10:30 on account of the drive for money. I was so tired I could hardly enjoy it. So late. Almost worth it to hear the opening music - so familiar I sometimes get up and do a few steps.

Depressing

[MM] said her doctor phoned to tell her to tell her relatives to watch a program on TV on depression. .... It was creepy to see these poor ones staring into space sitting alone. ... I am not able to watch depressing programs like that and always avoid them as did LL. One should be aware but not necessarily steeped in it.

Wrong

Last night I watched a Japanese film called "Family Gathering." It was really good, showing a Japanese family coming a few at a time to our country. ... Then Pres. Rooseveldt signed an order putting all Japanese in prison camps. ... This all made me remember how wrong LL thought this camp was. Just a few years ago, I came across a copy of a letter he had written to Vernon Thompson of RC, then in Congress, asking him to use his influence to free these innocent people.

Well - I can think of no more and shall ring off. - O yes - I saw the Swan on TV. Grace Kelley. Our theatre class in Shorewood [in 1930s; Milwaukee suburb] worked on that play. Excellent.

Poachers

You like to get into disputes and too bad you aren't here, as the Chippewa Nation has not stayed on the Reservation and has gone spear-fishing in other lakes, thus upsetting people who earn their living from Tourism. People won't come fish if the lakes are all fished out. I have seen on TV the spear fishing at night, and I don't see how the Indians can eat all that fish, but I bet they sell them. Of course I am on the side of the Indians; the resort owners are disgusted because Madison doesn't deal with it once for all. The Governor has spoken of getting out the militia.

My plans

My plans are to take a cab and visit my poor friend Portia Martin when she has finished her dinner about 12:30. Then about 9, Karen will come and will eat popcorn and drink tea and see how "Murder in the Vicarage" comes out. (As if we didn't know!)

Calliope

Well, [on TV David SaLoutos] played the calliope, which is pronounced CallEope in circus parlane and CallIopE off. It is 135 degrees inside that wagon, as steam is built up under the keys. He did several short tunes, as Yankee Doodle, Bird in Gilded Cage, etc. Later he played a Bell Wagon, sitting outside, pulling long levers instead of pressing keys. ... And the end of 1812 Overture.

(1988 mid January) Last night I watched Part 1 of Strange Interlude and laughed remembering how daddy despised plays and stories like that. He is right. Ooff!

Schuler's sideshow

When I tuned in [to Rev. Schuler's Church on TV] the choir was singing the first hymn. About 150-200 voices. From then on it was like a sideshow, with each act applauded vigorously. Act 1 - a boy soprano in white. Act 2 - A Fr. Jasu (?) who was captured (tortured) and at last released. This old man (white beard) told all and well applauded. Act 3 - The photographer took this so he could see a girl playing a pipe organ (the tune was The Spinner). A canary in a cage at her left! Act 4 - A song by a tenor. Act 5 - A huckster selling paper cutter made of gold (to pay for TV time) - write in and ask for your initial to be put on. The one shown was S. Act 6 - A girl playing a set of bells. Act 7 - The sermon, about 6 minutes. Know you are loved & be friendly, free, firm and ?? (feathered?). Before the choir ends it all, he speaks of the paper cutter once more, asking a contribution be sent with request if you can. "If you cannot help me, allow me to help you." You really must catch this.

Megachurch

As I slept little last night, I slept more this morning, with the result that I skipped church entirely. Mopischly I ate my Wheaties, wondered what to do next, and turned on the TV. I was just in time for the Service in the Rev. Schuler's Church, Garden City, CA. I have never heard you speak of this, and since you say you watch so little, perhaps it would not be amiss if I should tell you a little about it. This monstrous place is made almost entirely of glass and has a high-reaching tower. It is always crowded with people who often take bus trips to go, such as Carolyn Bancroft and her mother Dorothy. Schuler is adored by many. How they can, I cannot conceive. He is about five feet tall, thick white hair neatly trimmed, with a simpering sort of smile meant to be friendly.
