The HO train
(1969 Christmas)
Here I am going to tell about my last present to Lorin, the HO train, or postage stamp train. From a crack or two he let out the last couple of years, I got the idea he might like a minature train; so to Krouskop's I went and bought the last one they had, about $25, that is very high for me to go on a present. That night two boys knocked at the door wondering if I were going to keep the train as they had their eyes on it. If I were not, I should return it to Krouskop's and they would buy it. One was young Jim Clausius. Lorin kept at me - "Who was at the door, Polly?" - until I finally told him. He decided Christmas was for kids and the train better go back. But he unwrapped it and looked at it longingly and lovingly. He said that was the nicest thing anyone had thought of for him in years, and under other other circumstances he would have loved it. All right. So I brought it back.

Mittens in July

What weather do you have [in Kansas]? Hot summers? I wonder what the winters are. I have a spell on me for knitting mittens now, and if any of you will be needing mittens this winter, please draw around your hand, label with name, and forward together with color preferences.

Animal crackers

Believe it or not, I have just eaten a whale fish, and before that a graham hippopotomus. How could I resist with the box open on the coffee table before me? -- Sherry, [at Christmas] when we sat around half starved waiting for the call to supper, Skip would say, "Sherry's present!" and each of us would devour an entire wild animal with no trouble at all.

I am trying to find a place for Toys for Tots calendar (Bears on cover). At least I have the hammer handy! ... I found a place for the Bears calendar; it is in the bathroom suspended from a hook meant for robes. You can sit and look at it for hours.

Dear little tea pot
(1993 December)
When she [Susan Hirschy] grew older, she became v v fond of tea, and showed this by finishing up all of that elixir left in their tea cups by the company. So after a few years, I put the kettle on when she was coming and brewed our own tea in my dear little copper tea pot, which through the years somehow was felt to belong to both of us. "Shall I get out our dear little tea pot?" she'd say. This affection, and her affection for me, led me to give that dear little pot to her today. I hope you won't feel too bad about it. As one gets older and older, one is more inclined to part with keepsakes, I find. [P.S.] Do say it's all right.

The passing scene
(1993 April 28)
Helen Bruns, room-mate, had a large sign with her name outside the door. Then children made name-tulips with our names printed and put on doors, and Helen found the big one 6 x 12" (I never had one) was gone. Heavens! As I sat in the foyer watching the passing scene, she nailed Lynn Clark, who didn't realize it was the honor of the thing, and said, "Well, by now you can find your way to your room - can't cha?" The passing scene.

Lost sweater

The tam is coming along but not fast enough The ribbing over the ears is done and about an inch of the gray with that great big ball. But some day I'll send it with an alert it is coming. I'll never forget how Lawrence's sweater I knit was lost in the mail. I wrote I was sending it, but he didn't think it was then - thot later - so when we found out months had gone by. Address right and all, too.

Soapdish

I saw my good mail but was too exhausted [after tour] to open it, but on awakening saw my fine soap dish - already in use. Now I'll tell Beverly not to clean it with her old rag, or else I'll put it under my pillow nights.

Jelly

MM is having a new experience. She is making jelly out of everything she can boil. Our neighbor gave us two quarts of blackberries she picked, and jelly on the table for breakfast. It's apple sauce today - man across the street brot apples - heaven knows what kind - he said 4 grafts.

Wristwatch

Yesterday, not looking, I meant to drop my wrist watch in my top drawer of the set by the bed, and not looking, I let it fall in the glass of water near by. It is the pretty little gold one Daddy gave me - we went into the jewelry store together, in Milwaukee. Of course I dried it out near the heat, but it may never go again. The insides may be replaced perhaps. After me, I wish Dorothy to have it.

Farewell

Geraldine here with a story. Her daughter cleans for Paul Fowell [Polly's lawyer, recently deceased], and during the funeral, the two of them cleaned the Fowell home from top to bottom with no cost to the Fowells. Her face was radiant when she told me.

The Necklace

I thot I'd read that old diary of Daddy's, 1930.... Nearly all his beginning court cases and before we were married.... He said he was giving me a silver and amythest necklace for my birthday, and I am so ashamed to say not only do I not have it, but I don't remember it. (Oh dear!) Perhaps I lost it.

Jeeves

Sunday night I waited for Jeeves, and it was 10:30 on account of the drive for money. I was so tired I could hardly enjoy it. So late. Almost worth it to hear the opening music - so familiar I sometimes get up and do a few steps.

Pillow talk

Your Xmas gift to me is all embroidered but two flowers and is indeed beautiful. I still must make the trellis and also the inner pillow, which I searched for here but couldn't find. ... Sunday: Attempted to embroider your pillow, but have lost my needle. All efforts to find it with magnetic horse shoe the boys gave me so far in vain.

Pot boiler
(1988 January 22) Someone gave me a glass disk 2" across which when put in bottom of pot will prevent its boiling over! I have chicken soup boiling away, and this goes rattle rattle but does not boil over.

I cannot help but express my views on Xmas gifts. A "My Little Pony Barn" for $80. Are we all mad? What became of our resolution to cut down and try for $25? per person! I am not going to buy expensive things and I hope I don't get any to embarrass me.
