Broken heart

(Lyndon 4)
Another shameful time when we sat around the dining room table making valentines.  We were cutting and pasting away and what he did to annoy me I cannot recall.  But I grabbed his valentine and tore it up!

Lillian & Harry

(1980 memoirs)
Coming out of my front door, turning left was the way to country school [at Green Lake].  On the way I passed the farm where Lillian, my friend, lived with her family, including a brother, Harry.  Lillian was a blonde with dimples and thin hair, a nice girl.

Muskmelon

(1980 memoirs)
One thing as a child Frankie despised above all and that was a muskmelon.  So of course her brother Henry tried to tease her about it.  He dressed one up as a doll and offered it to her.  Amazed at her good fortune and his generosity, she lifted it up in her arms to her face - when suddenly - her eyes still dilated in the telling - she caught the scent of the thing and then threw it as far as she could throw!  Of course then Henry and any others in the joke laughed their heads off.  But when I knew her [over 50 years later], she had gotten over this horror and we had them on the table.

Playmates

(1993 May 5, memoirs)
One time [when we lived at Green Lake] my parents were worried I had no playmate, so I was dressed prettily and taken half way to Lone Tree Point, where another girl my age met me.  I recall the white clovers.  We were unloaded and left alone for 2 or 3 hours.  We tried to play together but very dull and my mother said I never had to go again.  ...  We lived in a "house in the woods."  I recall it had a porch on two sides of the house, and Lyn's buggy was there for naps.

Martha's children

(1990s memoirs)
[What Martha's children did:]  Frank took up gardening for wealthy families; Lois made wigs, did tailoring and housekeeping; Mary worked in a shoe factory and did dressmaking; and Bill, the baby of the family, went off to work for the railroad, taking his lunch.

Turkey

(1969 Christmas)
For years Mary M's godfather, Louis SaLoutos, gave us a turkey all hot from his oven for our family Christmas Eve supper, and this year was a repeat performance.  ...  I hurried around, set the table, baked a mince pie, and Skip and Bruce went after the turkey.  ...  Lawrence [4] watched at the window for the turkey to come and opened the door.

The HO train

(1969 Christmas)
Here I am going to tell about my last present to Lorin, the HO train, or postage stamp train.  From a crack or two he let out the last couple of years, I got the idea he might like a minature train; so to Krouskop's I went and bought the last one they had, about $25, that is very high for me to go on a present.  That night two boys knocked at the door wondering if I were going to keep the train as they had their eyes on it.  If I were not, I should return it to Krouskop's and they would buy it.  One was young Jim Clausius.  Lorin kept at me - "Who was at the door, Polly?" - until I finally told him.  He decided Christmas was for kids and the train better go back.  But he unwrapped it and looked at it longingly and lovingly.  He said that was the nicest thing anyone had thought of for him in years, and under other other circumstances he would have loved it.  All right.  So I brought it back.

Nightmare phoning

(1967 March 20)
Last night I dreamed I was phoning, facing breakfast alcove, when the ceiling came down and an electric shock caught my hand in the phone making it limp.  I called MM from upstairs, and she came, and I told her to get Joe R. to fix the ceiling.  Then you came in all covered with a yellow oilskin, no holes for face (sort of KKK) - but I knew you right away.  You said, "What's all this?"  I said, "A mess.  Where did you come from?"  You said, "Oh, I have been staying with friends who have a little cottage over here on the Wabash.  Been doing a little writing."  This kept pegging at me - Wabash?  Here in Wisconsin?  Until I finally work up.  Queer.

Coal cutter

(1969 February 9)
What a time with Lawrence [3+] and the accident!  ...  O - the parallels I could draw!  Remember when we were all ready to go to a Masonic banquet, and Lawrence's father decided to take a silver knife and try to cut a piece of coal in two at the sink.  Nearly cut his finger off.  So off to the doctor and then to the banquet.

Skippy II

(1967 April 21)
Thoroly enjoyed your section on Lawrence [age 18 months], Skippy II, chip off the old block.  No nap while he is awake.  Gee, I don't know whether I could cope with him singlehanded or not.  He is getting to be a real person - his pictures are darling.

Sugar baby

(1993 December)
[Susan Hirschy] used to live with her family next to us.  Jan used to put her snow suit on her and give her a well sealed paper bag containing the one cup of sugar I had phoned over for in desperation, and say "Give it to Polly, Susan."  And I on my porch would urge her on to come.

Evelyn

(1991 July 26)

Evelyn [Saloutos] told us about the fine apartment she was living in now above the Grill, and other apartments she was renting out. Her other topic is her boys, Harry and Charles teaching and George running the Richland Center waste place - we take our old glass and papers there.

Jailbird

(1991 April 9)

Some time ago you said you thought Geraldine seemed to be a jolly sort and asked if I ever enjoyed any conversations with her. I said no - that we were always working Wednesdays. However, yesterday it happened. Altho it was past 11 when she should go home, she stayed to put a bed spread from the washer to dryer, thinking it too heavy for me. So I sat in the living room knitting, back to Lorin's study; she sat across from me, ear on washer. Earlier when we changed my bed, she said one of her sons would be out of jail May 1 and would then be able to work to pay her back $50 she gave him for cigarettes, which, if you smoke them, must be bought at the jail. He was in for driving while drunk. [to be continued]

Robin Hood

(1988 April 16)

Kathryn Bailey ws telling me about the time you ran over to show her how you looked in your Robin Hood get up. [She painted a picture of Skip in it.] She was wondering what to take to an art show at University of Wisconsin, [where] some good US artists invited all artists to submit work every fall. Kathryn had three of hers hung: "County Fair," "Frank Lloyd Wright" (onstage with musicians), [and] "Robin Hood." She is very proud of her work and has programs telling about the judges, etc.

Skip's first birthday

(1932 March 28, Monday) Our baby is one year old. He can walk about a yard, gurgles but doesn't talk any. I had the Kay relatives to a little party for him and baked him a cake, but he is pretty young yet.

Treats

(1987 November 7)

23 was the correct number of Trick-or-Treaters I had, but at one time had 50 or so, I think when families lived in the barracks at the Community Building during wartime.

Bluejay

(1986 August 26)

I noticed the flag was up on my mailbox and went out to investigate. Saw a pretty plastic bluejay some kid yanked off of someplace and put in my box. After the rain I'll try to rig it up so passersby can see it. And owner take it.

Mischief

(1978 February 15)

Life with the Burnetts - one night Bruce was painting the basement floor and MM had a headache and took a bath; each thot the boys were with the other. When MM emerged, she found Ben [4] pounding Fritos in the livingroom rug with a pingpong paddle, while David [3] was working away in the basement bathroom filling the toilet bowl and shower with peanut shells! They were spanked and put to bed, but no guarantee on what's next.

Terrible two

(1976 July 22)

David [Burnett, Polly's grandson] was two on Friday and was so naughty! MM had mothers and kids in for coffee, and he bit the children and bit [his brother] Ben till the blood came. Locked his father out of the the car at Hot Parking Lot while grocery shopping, climbed on stove with lit burners, after supper poured shampoo all over himself. Sherry - still time to think it over!
