Assignment book
(1980 memoirs)
[In Tess O'Brian's class] we each had an assignment book in which we were required to note the daily work assigned and copy questions to be answereed on the text. These were collected and graded. The object was to teach us good study habits and to be steady and neat.

Mild and pleasant

Frankie's manner was always mild and pleasant. She held in anger because she felt it was the right thing to do. I have never seen her in any excess of joy or hatred, anger or love. Always thoughtful, at times forgetful, never unkind, never revengeful.

Herman

[Florence Clapp] grew up well educated and graduated in music from Ripon College in piano. Her parents "kept her down," were very strict, and she was not allowed to have any beaux, any fun. So of course what was to happen did happen and she fell in love with the hired man, Herman Hillsburg.

Surely do not understand the clergy's rules. Since Father Caballero has been here, Father Maier [retired] has not called on Portia even as a friend in fear of taking the priest's place. They surely are afraid of usurping rights.

Mischief

Life with the Burnetts - one night Bruce was painting the basement floor and MM had a headache and took a bath; each thot the boys were with the other. When MM emerged, she found Ben [4] pounding Fritos in the livingroom rug with a pingpong paddle, while David [3] was working away in the basement bathroom filling the toilet bowl and shower with peanut shells! They were spanked and put to bed, but no guarantee on what's next.

Lawnmower

Glad to hear Lawrence [11] has gone to camp. A good thing. Also a good thing and high time he is mowing the lawn. David W. wears football spike shoes so he does not slip on my slopes in back. He is too exhausted to do it today as he is on a hard job in 25 degrees digging trenches for irrigation system at Boaz for new apple orchard. But is coming after Church.

Not a bad dog

Well, our dog is really a darling. I have known dogs but never one so understanding as this one. He never cries if staked out or locked up in garage or laundry. He always seems to be trying to read my mind so he can mind me better. We laugh about reactions to newspapers. To the cat, the rattle of a paper means FOOD - that I am putting one on the floor and am about to feed her. To the dog it means get in your bed or you'll get a swat over the tail, and one day when I read the paper at the kitchen table, he was constantly in dread. Every time I turned a page, he jumped into his bed.

Learn to work well and quickly and NOT MULL (the way I do). I simply could not, nor could my bottom, considered here as a separate entity, stand all that sitting and reading. You need to shake it, my love, and excercise more, mix more with the world and life in general.

Fish story

This morning I heard MM's voice in the neighborhood, much later looked for her in vain. About noon saw her coming up from the Foot Bridge with four boys, happy as a lark. She told me later they had caught a Harp and were going to put it in the watering trough. It has been so unpleasant all day disciplining her for going and for saying she didn't.

[A doctor's wife] enjoyed the medical convention at Atlantic City. She said just wonderful - she had been able to watch three operations on color TV and you could even see the blood dripping! I said how marvelous. She is so different from Eve - she is one for living and let the chips fall where they may. Eve is more for order and beauty and strict adherence to working schedules.

How to deal with loud music

Dear Skip, my heart goes out to you in your problem of not being able to sleep because of [daughter] Sally's playing her records all night long. Now this is the very best and better [plans] and try them and stand FIRM.
Plan 1. You do not state your bed time, so I have to guess at that. Let us say Sally <15> has "a little girl over" and you and they retire at 10 with the understanding that leaves one hour for baths, shampoos, record, with QUIET at 11. Be very strict about this and shout if you must. Explain if you are going to provide food and shelter, you must have sleep. What will happen? Sally may play anyway. Then go calmly, take the records or machine to your room and do not give in that night but return all when you wake up.
Plan 2. Put her out in your shack [i.e. study] to spend the night, and let her play as much as she pleases. If that ground is too sacred, buy a tent and put it as far away from the house as possible. Have a plan with RR [Sally's godfather] to disguise himself as an Indian and come hooting down on her and break at least one record, scattering large pieces of paper on which "QUIET" is written, or "Go to Sleep."
I have a lot more, but perhaps the best of all is to explain well why you need sleep; and if ignored, give a couple good spanks on her bottom. Try these, and if results do not please will get new ones. BE FIRM. Of course there is bribery, and taking away favorite things. 11 p.m. is the time for SILENCE and be adamant! What about Sherry? Does she suffer in Silence?
... It seems to me I have talked to parents who entered into the child's fun and played games and danced right along with them until all retired at 11, exhausted. That was never LL.
Of course she has been having her way for some time now, and you will have your talk all ready. Sherry must be on your side.
But here is another thing: Is she never to be allowed a night to entertain? After all, she is one of the family. Explain to her that this is the way it has to be unless she is going to start supporting the family herself. So pick a night, not always a Thursday, Friday, etc. But by the week. Maybe you could trade - you could do her dishes so she could and must go upstairs and play records. But when you go to bed, it's LIGHTS OUT.
... I am surprised Sherry has put up with this.
Did you ever try these Ear Plugs travelling men often use while sleeping in noisy hotels?
Now, you try all these things, one a week, and if you still can't control her, I promise to write her a good stiff letter and hope for good results. So much for "Sleepy Time Sal" - if only!

Teach him a lesson

[Daughter Mary Margaret has brought her cat with her while keeping house for Polly.]
Cyrus has now taken to walking on my dresser but some day when I catch him he will have a spanking.... Having had lunch, I went to bed and had my nap. Cyrus so glad to see me he got under the covers but got right out again. He has taken to walking on my dresser! I am going to have the fly swatter handy for a spanking!
