I think I went to the funeral alone. Daddy phoned and told me to keep my chin up and he'd be home as fast as he could; he had seen the papers. I recall there were some from Ripon ... [more from Fond du Lac]. The young man, very nice looking in a dark suit (cannot think of his name: A--? G--? (Gutreiter? perhaps) shook hands with me and spoke very well expressing his sympathy.

The accident

A storm blew up fast and the boat turned over. As I remember it, Lyn let the friend have the gasolene can to hang on to as Lyn was a fairly strong swimmer. But wearing a leather jacket etc. he hardly had a chance. We all felt so sorry for his dying fighting the water, but I mourned a life wasted.

My father went on to say that Lyndon and a friend were working at a resort on Lake Winnebago (I think) [Beaver Dam, actually] and they had gone out in a small gasoline launch for fish on a very overcast day. Perhaps they were asked to do this to serve fish at the resort.

There was one time, probably the Homecoming Dance -- or a prom -- when Eleanor wanted me to get her a date with someone at Ripon. I said yes, and did. But Dick [her boyfriend] got wind of it and phoned me and asked if I would get him a date. So I did. Well, I believe Eleanor's date came, Dick's date came (I don't recall the details) and mine. For a few minutes there Cousin Frankie's living room was very crowded. Looking back on this I am amazed at myself. Eleanor had been going steady with Dick for some time and I was good friends with both. I think they rode together on the train going back and patched it up.

And one night after a gala weekend in Madison with Lorin, then at the University, I was in a bus leaving town, when in a triangular store window I saw a whole wonderful set of Fode Blue, just like hers. O! How I wanted to call out! Stop the bus! Know the name of the store so I could write! But on we went. --And I? I sank back in the seat knowing it was gone forever. It was, too. I never in my whole life saw any pieces like it any more.

My room has its window facing the street, a thin carpet on the floor, and a large closet on the left. One time I brought my mother's Fode Blue wedding china with me, what was left of it, thinking to be very collegiate and have tea in my room some day. But alas! The shelf came down, smashing all the cups and saucers, leaving me only a few eight-sided plates. I felt very bad about that.

Kanables!

Think I'll visit Mabel Kanable at Jean's tomorrow. Think I told you she fell on her lawn below zero, where she lay one hour until helped. The fracture was pinned on her hip, and she is running the vocational school from her bed. We were convulsed. She had her own phone at hospital, and she would answer by saying, "Kanables!" just as if she were at home. But she mustn't be alone yet, so is at Jean's. Is fine - wheelchair - crutches.

TA's on strike

Daddy heard driving in Madison terrible now since bus strike. Cars bumper to bumper take hours to go few blocks. Parking? !! This riot caused a lot of trouble. Every day papers full of opinions - police brutality - student rights - administration power, etcetcetc. Meetings rehashed on the radio for breakfast and on TV evenings. President Harrington interviewed by panel, etc.

Yesterday George Bancroft's funeral here. He was head of a building concern - concrete - made garages, roads, etc. Had permission to carry a gun on Fridays when he had the payroll $5000 for crew. Came home with gun in sweater pocket, stumbled on stairs, gun went off, bullet in lungs, etc. Seems odd he, an ex soldier, could be so careless with a gun.

Last night Daddy went to Father S's study group [about changes in Episcopalian liturgy]. He came home feeling he had done his duty by going and keeping mum. But on the side, tells me what errors in spelling were made on blackboard, what haf truths were stated etc. He could give the lecture without notes! But very sporting to go.

Last night we spent an hour at the Meadows - Ann told about a wild tea she attended to honor a girl from India dressed in a sari (named Maude Murphy!). It was at the height of the Arab-Israeli war. As they sat sipping tea, one large-busted woman folded her arms and took a stand. "Push them into the sea!" she would exclaim. "Drive the Jews into the sea!" Nearly everyone else there knew Ann to be Jewish. One meek soul did say, "I do think, don't you, we should all try to practice brotherhood?" The worst part was the Indian had come here to observe the religious tolerance she had heard America stood for.

A few strong showers cause rivulets to run into the Pine, the river near our house, and of course that rises. ... The Pine is high, and people may be evacuated; Geraldine thot she might, so did not come to work. ... Geraldine has news today. She won $100 on a lottery ticket, from SuperValue I think it was. I am glad for her. One arm is numb and she has doctor bills to pay. She was just in here telling me about Alma's silo burning - my beautician. It's the silage, not the whole thing.

People are having quiet protest walks against the war. The other day there was one here from the Court House to the Library. I suppose Bush thinks he is doing the right thing, but it is a very sad thing he is doing. Oher nations stand by, safe.

The Necklace

I thot I'd read that old diary of Daddy's, 1930.... Nearly all his beginning court cases and before we were married.... He said he was giving me a silver and amythest necklace for my birthday, and I am so ashamed to say not only do I not have it, but I don't remember it. (Oh dear!) Perhaps I lost it.
