Last night we spent an hour at the Meadows - Ann told about a wild tea she attended to honor a girl from India dressed in a sari (named Maude Murphy!). It was at the height of the Arab-Israeli war. As they sat sipping tea, one large-busted woman folded her arms and took a stand. "Push them into the sea!" she would exclaim. "Drive the Jews into the sea!" Nearly everyone else there knew Ann to be Jewish. One meek soul did say, "I do think, don't you, we should all try to practice brotherhood?" The worst part was the Indian had come here to observe the religious tolerance she had heard America stood for.

Dear little tea pot
(1993 December)
When she [Susan Hirschy] grew older, she became v v fond of tea, and showed this by finishing up all of that elixir left in their tea cups by the company. So after a few years, I put the kettle on when she was coming and brewed our own tea in my dear little copper tea pot, which through the years somehow was felt to belong to both of us. "Shall I get out our dear little tea pot?" she'd say. This affection, and her affection for me, led me to give that dear little pot to her today. I hope you won't feel too bad about it. As one gets older and older, one is more inclined to part with keepsakes, I find. [P.S.] Do say it's all right.

Turkey talk

[Polly is having her French class over for dinner.] Bill came to put leaves in table and put bridge table up. I am going to make a (chicken) noodle casserole and a turkey rice casserole (Jennie O turkey roasting now). It's all turkey in both. ... I told Bill my May basket story while having green tea - Bill's mistake - I let it go.

Chinoiserie

I have the table set for supper. I thought as long as we were having chop suey, I'd set the table Chinese fashion; not hard to do, my china itself, Blue Willow, is Chinese. No chop sticks tho. Besides chop suey we have orange salad, rolls (store) and butter and cinnamon ice cream and crackers. And tea whether they like it or not (no choice).

Bill took me to town yesterday for the usual hair do and bank stop. He bought a coffee cake for me, and Jan came and brewed oolong tea.

My plans

My plans are to take a cab and visit my poor friend Portia Martin when she has finished her dinner about 12:30. Then about 9, Karen will come and will eat popcorn and drink tea and see how "Murder in the Vicarage" comes out. (As if we didn't know!)

Alaska bound

[After a heavy snowfall, next-door neighbor] Suzy Hirschy came to see me wearing snow shoes and a back pack in which she had her new sleeping "mummy"-bag lined with red and also two heavy dictionaries to toughen her up for Alaska. I think she will enjoy her experience. She brot two Fortune Cookies and we had tea. Hers read: "You will set your foot on many lands" and that suited her to a T.

Coffee cake

Well now I am at the kitchen table, having got up [from sickbed] for elevenses. I tried the coffee cake - a small piece and it is delicious. Joy [of Cooking], p. 589, the Quick, Rich, Moist Coffee Cake with Honey Bee Topping. My first attempt. Just the nuts 39 cents! A small bag. I will freeze some so you can have some.

Whatever next?

Yesterday I phoned Naeema Malik to come over for a cup of tea, and as I was on the way to put the kettle on, here came two men from the city water department to turn off the water and install a new water meter as mine no longer worked. Whatever next? Well, didn't take them too long, and soon Gen. Taft came with a problem in her crocheting, and soon Naeema with baby, and we had water again and therefore soon were drinking tea.

Birthday fun

Many many thanks for my birthday presents! I am writing with my pen now and find it very handy to use nightly on my diary also. Daddy gave me a gold pin in the shape of a leaf and a big box of tea. Wardie [Birkett] gave me a gray and white scarf nice with my gray coat. Both of them had cards with funny dogs like Dee. Also I got about half a dozen other cards from friends and relatives. Fun to get. Actually I wasn't feeling too peppy because of my cold - darn it.

Coffee ploy

I wanted to tell you how I have been managing my coffee lately as I was so embarassed when the top fell off the old pot. Well, I perk it in the big pot which is too big to pour from, but doesn't boil over as did the old pot. Then I pour it into my copper tea pot which is just right for pouring and always keeps its top on. And that is how I keep the trouble away caused by the old pot.

I read an item which has shaken me to my depths today - which says that all tea grows on the same type of bush and that what makes the difference is the way it is cured, etc. (and what branch). Shocking - isn't it?

Dutch teapot

In the meanwhile I have used the tea pot, a lot. When I first saw it I fell in love with the beauty of the shape and the metal. But when I became more acquainted with it I got to know what a wonderful little pot it really is. It goes on and on keeping the tea piping hot. I don't know why it doesn't cool off, really. And as if that were not enough, it never spills no matter how full it is. I didn't know before the Dutch were that clever. I have the one that matches my kitchen china and a small one for just a cup. But neither are one bit obliging if I pour in a bit too much water to suit them.

What would you like [for Christmas], love? All I need is chewing gum, about a package a week, but not too stale and no sugar or fruit flavors. I think MM is giving quilts she made, a lasting gift. How can you be needing towels for the kitchen after all the towels she gave you last year? She said, "Towels for all over the house." ... What style tea kettle do you favor? singing or silent? enamel or aluminum? capacity? Dishtowels, like turkish? or flour sacks? or linen?
