(1980 memoirs)
I (the C in MICE) miss those girls and those days. I never have been with any friends who laughed more and had more fun, tho we had problems too. Well -- so I left them all and went to school.

Chorus line
(1993 December)
Yesterday a long row of girls, about a dozen, came in my room after being introduced and permission granted. The leader said, "We are a bunch of girls who likes to get together. I am from Ithaca." The large girl in the center gave the tone, and all sang Xmas songs, very lovely. Also one day kindergartners.

T-shirt
(1993 November)
A Guide by the three authors to the Mushrooms [of Kansas] book - all on my new T shirt, for which I do thank you v v much. Yes, it is a bit large, but you must know better than I do by this time what Experience with Laundry will do.

Scout moms
(1988 August 31)
I remember as well as if yesterday sitting down to the phone and calling and calling trying to get [Girl Scout] leaders. Then one time when two leaders took a troop, they disagreed and I was asked which one should have her way. Then one woman said she would be treasurer if all the dues were paid to her. Then one leader paid dues to a different person, and the Treasurer quit. Must have been for cookies. Yet all want their girls in it.

This little church
(1986 October 1)
Don't complain to me about too many clubs to go to! You start the young early, too. -- Well, I used to belong to two or three but no more - free as a bird. Except for church, and that may go too. This little church [St. Barnabas] was meant to be chaste and free from everything that might clutter it up. Now we have shades on the windows, flags, these big banners, and now Mrs. Saloutas in honor of Louie is giving us ceiling fans. So there goes the architechture and all LL's research. I just may not be able to face them and quit. Louie has already defaced the yard by the erection of this bell tower suitable for a monastery.

Always in order
(1987 September 6 )
Congratulations on being Mr. President [of the Midwest Medieval Conference]. Keep the meetings short and you'll be popular. I once went (years ago) to a long PTA meeting that went ON & ON. At last I remembered Daddy's telling me a motion to adjourn is always in order. I waved my hand and when called on said, "I move we adjourn." Cries of Yea (relief!) and all thankfully bustled out leaving the confused president saying, "But - but - I had a couple of other things to bring up."

Eagles
(1974 february)
I am interested in saving the Eagles at Cassville. I answered a news story and got publications from the Eagle Valley Environmentalists, Inc. Would you like a patch ($1.50) or a button (50 cents)? I only hope they behave themselves once they get protection and don't get to stealing stock from farmers. They are so noble, though - so powerful.

Hobnobbing
(1974 Good Friday)
Wednesday is the Auxiliary State Historical Tea [in Madison] and I am planning on going. I have a special invitation to attend the Board meeting [as a trustee] and have a sandwich with the members at noon. It will be interesting meeting those I have been writing to. Plan to come back on evening bus ... to keep it simple. Wish I had some new clothes - about time.

No fun
(1973 November 18)
Learn as much about as many things as you can and a lot about a very few. I know if I were a good bridge player and enjoyed bridge parties, I would be asked out to play. The times I have gone, I have been very bored, very tired, and a migraine the next day. That crowd is not for me. If it were, my circle would be wider. Just so I might have bowling friends, golfing friends, etc.

Nomination
(1973 early December)
Last week I was honored by being asked to submit my name for nomination for the Board of Trustees of the Women's Auxiliary of the [Wisconsin] State Historical Society. Both the chairman of the membership drive and the director of the Museum like my interest and work.

Miss Phelps
(1966 January 7)
Last night Daddy took me to Lees' in a snow storm - I didn't wear my boots because I didn't know it was snowing when I left the house. Then LL was already waiting. We went out to the Methodist Home to pick up a cute little lady who used to be a county supervisor. She started teaching country school and pulled herself up, teaching every subject in every grade 1 - 12th until she graduated from UW and was promoted. Miss Phelps. Myrtle Aber brot me half way up the hill and got stuck, and I had to walk up in my good shoes while she slid down backwards.

Flies in the ointment
(1964 May 8)
MM had the St. Barnabas Auxiliary at her house [in country] last evening with 11 present.... Two flies in ointment. That cat was let loose and stopped the meeting twice by jumping on people or getting on window sill etc. Also when she went to put the mint ice cream on the cake, [husband] Junior had eaten most of it. I would have skipped it instead of serving such small helpings, but she had planned on its matching the napkins, so went thru with it. The napkins were decorated with violets and she had a big bowl on her coffee table.

Tea for me
(1963 October?)
Kiwanis tonight and LL is hoping it won't be Swiss steak again ... I must get my little supper and make tea.
O - tea for me
And me for tea!

The shrimp original
(1962 March?)
I have a shrimp original in the oven, and the secret ingredient is - shrimp! And I sit here loafing until it is ready. I could be reading The Anglican Communion Past and Future by Gerald Ellison, Bishop of Chester, as I have Chapter One, to give at a Congregation Study Club in Lent. But not now.

Brownie camp
(1952? Summer)
Rain this morning and no camp; so we carve our designs on carrots tomorrow morning. Monday, the first day, left me a wreck (30 Brownies pointing their teaspoons at me simultaneously demanding to know whether their Plaster of Paris was hardening OK almost de trop) but I went back Tuesday, and tho I have been sleeping afternoons and going to bed early, I have been all right. Ann Rose [Meadows, another leader] seems to be exhausted and nervous when I see her. Tomorrow will be the last day.

Teeny troubles
(1959 April 19)
Tomorrow I meet with MM's [Girl Scout] troop which remnant has been put with girls of St. Mary's in their school basement. There is so much jealousy in a group of 4 girls that age one wonders how to accomplish anything. I am thinking of having them come over here to do a little outdoor cooking when it warms up again. Maybe the walk, and the change, will mix up the St. M's and Jr. Highs. Not much time left. And no Day Camp Director yet. About July 1 all my troubles will be over.

Sliding down scale
(1958 October 10, Homecoming)
Yesterday after all I went to the Executive Mansion and drank my tea. Also got my 5-year pin. We left Richland Center at noon and some of the girls had eaten no lunch so on the way home we stopped at the Sport Bowl and had a sandwich and watched the end of the World Series. "Well," I said to myself, "here am I a leader of youth, just having received my 5-year pin for service, sitting in a bar watching the World Series with a lot of truck drivers." And I mused upon Life.

Real Americana
(1958 July)
Last night we had Ann and Carl [Meadows] over for supper. Ate in the dining room tho considered eating out only it kept threatening rain. After supper Ann and I washed up while C. and LL played the hi fi. Afterwards we strolled around the grounds. Carl fascinated by our jungle [wild slope down to river]. When the mosquitoes got too much for us they decided to go and we all walked over to [son] Mike's convertible which he did not take to Colorado with him on his job this summer. Impulsively suggested they give us a ride so off we went. What a windy thrill!! Not fast either.
Ended up at the park where Square Dance Club was dancing on the tennis courts. About three figures going. We got out and watched and in between records and calling we would talk to the dancers we knew. Just as we were leaving Donna (our stenographer) arrived on the scene. We had no idea that all was going on and of course our dancing teacher was fascinated because, as she pointed out, it was "real Americana."

Fair days
(1957 September, Sunday)
Saturday was a big day around here with the Fair on and all. Mary M <12> is going with another farmer, Sam Anderson, who lives beyond Premo's Orchard. He phoned me he had, with a friend Denny Coppernall, fixed up an old surrey and would call for her at 9:30 to take her to the Fair. Also call for D's girlfriend K.D. About 10:30 they pulled in the drive, the surrey drawn by a team of gigantic white work horses. Behind was tied Dolly, Sam's beautiful brown riding horse. Well, I took a lot of pictures. She was covered with confusion, poor girl. It took Sam 2 hours to go from home to fair [about 2 miles]. Daddy and I also went to the fair - in our car - and sat in the grandstand for as long as we could take it. Saw the stock auction, the 4-H club parade. Many of MM's farmer friends in this, some girls leading monster bulls, Sam on Dolly, leaders in surrey, kids with projects. Then M and friends rode back to farm where they borrowed surrey and now returned it, 2 hours. Sam and MM doubled on Dolly to Andersons. Then Sam brot her back in his car, old Ford. Today she is highly indignant because she has to spend a quiet day at home. Nearly kills her. Also Friday she was all day at fair with other friends and spent nearly $5.
