The assistant for our section [of biology] was an Armenian, Katcher Tutungeon, who spoke with a deep accent. Well do I recall the day I put my eye to the microscope and obediently "drew what I saw." I had no idea what it was for some dim reason until he made his rounds and said, "Miss Parsons, your bed bug is OK, but you have drawn him on his head, upside down!"

Parrot

Once Lorin gave me a lamp with a parrot on it -- for Polly -- and that was somewhere about [my bedroom]. The chairs were handwoven cane seated and nobody thought twice about it. And of course a mirror hung on the wall -- for me.

Squirrels

Frankie could coax squirrels to eat peanuts out of her hand, and Lorin took a picture one time of a squirrel taking a peanut from my hand, tho no credit to me.

Water

Or Robin never left her nest, and I am so proud of her. And I'll tell you what attracts wild life - water. I have been putting some out and enjoy seeing all birds and squirrels bathe and drink. Never knew it could be so much fun.

Elephants

Kiwanis sponsored a wild animal movie - Africa. ... It was in the Auditorium but a small portable screen. Good pictures tho. ... Did you know the elephants feed their young from their two breasts which are between their front legs? And often 2 young. One 5 years old and one as old as 3? I never knew that before.

Signs of spring

Do you actually hear mocking birds? I saw a butterfly, and wondered how he could be so misled. On this walk [our neighbor] Hubert was shoveling his walk. He said, "At last getting down to the sidewalk." Getting off big cakes of ice. I still can't get my back door open - an icy snow drift has been there all winter.

Almost trivia

Lots of little things going on around here of interest to us but almost too trivial to mention - the gopher that climbed way to the top of the apple tree; the brown thrasher family; the turtle the newsboy had in his money bag when he was collecting one morning; the new type sermons Fr. Stolpman is giving; my tooth that broke off with a crown in the offing - are all samples. It is the same with you, no doubt.

Animal crackers

Believe it or not, I have just eaten a whale fish, and before that a graham hippopotomus. How could I resist with the box open on the coffee table before me? -- Sherry, [at Christmas] when we sat around half starved waiting for the call to supper, Skip would say, "Sherry's present!" and each of us would devour an entire wild animal with no trouble at all.

Mrs. Brice, wife of clergyman, just left, having invited me to a drawing class Monday. The first lesson will be to draw an apple, and the next an article standing near the apple. I am thinking of a spider and web.

Home again

Jan came for me this morning about 9:30, and we went over to our house [33 Grove St.]. She threw up the garage door, and when we saw all the bird feed, we fed and watered the birds as MM did the last day of her life. We made tea and had coffee cake from the freezer. By the time she washed up, it was time to get me back here for dinner. A gorgeous day to be out! To feel the sun!

Bat bite

MM tried to be kind to bat, picked it up to save its life, but it misunderstood her motive and bit her, and she now goes to hospitals both in RC and Madison.

When I got up from my nap, Mary M took me for a walk around the house. Ah! the flowers she has set out and got started! Now she has the hose, and we do not know what a hole is. Thinking it may be a bees' nest, we let well enough alone.

MM buys old bread and pulls it apart and throws it down the back steps and turns the light on, and soon begin to come - a skunk - a fox - and several other creatures. We watch from my bedroom window. She is going to try throwing on the grass for a better view.

Lyme disease

Our state entomologist was on the call-in program today. The problems some people are having with insects! Some are taking samples to County Agent for identification, and worst of all a woman with a little girl up north where the deer come in the yard, scrape against bushes, etc. - she got Lyme Disease. My [box elder] bugs are becoming fewer.

Poachers

You like to get into disputes and too bad you aren't here, as the Chippewa Nation has not stayed on the Reservation and has gone spear-fishing in other lakes, thus upsetting people who earn their living from Tourism. People won't come fish if the lakes are all fished out. I have seen on TV the spear fishing at night, and I don't see how the Indians can eat all that fish, but I bet they sell them. Of course I am on the side of the Indians; the resort owners are disgusted because Madison doesn't deal with it once for all. The Governor has spoken of getting out the militia.

Image problem

Kathryn has a new problem: a robin keeps hopping on her porch and pecks at his reflection in the glass. She made a falcon after consulting encyclopedia, and Pulvermacher's [poultry house] brot a stuffed owl and put it up, but nothing helps. I told her to tape newspapers to the outside, but very cold and windy and she has not done so. Maybe she likes the Fame.
