Funeral

(Lyndon 23)
I think I went to the funeral alone.  Daddy phoned and told me to keep my chin up and he'd be home as fast as he could; he had seen the papers.  I recall there were some from Ripon  ...  [more from Fond du Lac].  The young man, very nice looking in a dark suit  (cannot think of his name:  A--?  G--?  (Gutreiter? perhaps) shook hands with me and spoke very well expressing his sympathy.

Blank

(Lyndon 16)
I have been trying to think whether Lyndon came out to Green Lake when we did get married, but I can't remember him there at all.

A matter of fact

(Dogs 17)
[Editor's Note.  Polly's account of the finding of Vica is pure fantasy.  When Skip got out of the hospital in Milwaukee, he stayed for a week with his grandfather Alfred and combed the want ads himself.  He telephoned around and found Vica.  Alfred drove him out to meet her.  The asking price was $125, and Skip was hoping that Alfred would pay for her as a gift.  Instead, Alfred loaned him the money, which he paid back $10 a month from his allowance.  When it was time for Skip to go back home, Polly and Lorin went to the kennel for the first time, and Skip took possession of his new dog.]

Memory book

(1980 memoirs)
Well -- now -- [when a freshman at Ripon College] one of the first things I bought for $5.00 and which I could not well afford was a large memory book with stiff red covers decorated with a big red R on the cover.  Inside was ruled spaces for such things as teachers, friends, social functions, dates, and the like.  I filled it in the first year or two and then lost interest.

Recite by heart

(1980 memoirs)
Our teacher was a leather-faced, seasoned old biddy who rode her bicycle to school every day until snow came, and she knew pretty well what the questions might be and primed us accordingly.  All of us could recite by heart without taking a full breath the circulation of the blood beginning with "Starting at the left ventricle" -- or is it the right auricle?  Does it matter?  We also knew the causes of the Civil War, rules for spelling, the names of our senators, and a lot more.

Some odd experiences

(1980 memoirs)
So four years [at Ripon] went by for me, on the whole pleasant and satisfactory.  I suppose I was learning quite a few things.  [I had already learned other things in grade school.]  I remember back about some odd experiences with friends -- girls and boys too.

Square hall

(1980 memoirs)
Just a minute!  I have forgotten a very important little vestibule-like hall between the living room and dining room.  This four feet by four feet space had four doors; if you are coming from the living room, there is the living room door behind you, the dining room door ahead of you, and on the right the door to the renter's apartment and on the left -- ah, that is the door to the stairs.  And up the stairs is my room.

Trying to forget

(1980 memoir)
The real reason [I am writing this memoir] is that I am trying to forget some of it myself.  Life for me has just about gone by, hard as it is to realize.  Here am I, 76, having outlived all those I am writing about.  Enough of this, then, and let's start going back.

Absent-minder

(1994 January 18)
Ruth [Pilger] Andrews wrote me she could no longer remember me, and this has made me very sad.  All she can recall is:  I in a tam-o-shanter hiking along with her.  I have slept with her in her bed in Ripon  We shared classes and good times.  I must forget her, I suppose.  She is busy answering a tabletop of consoling letters since Dick's death.

Home again

(1993 June 30)

Jan came for me this morning about 9:30, and we went over to our house [33 Grove St.]. She threw up the garage door, and when we saw all the bird feed, we fed and watered the birds as MM did the last day of her life. We made tea and had coffee cake from the freezer. By the time she washed up, it was time to get me back here for dinner. A gorgeous day to be out! To feel the sun!

Candlemass

(1993 May 20)

We rememb ered our dead here going to chapel and lighting a candle for each. I should have called out the Martins' names and lit candles, and shall next year.

Not thinking

(1992 July 12)

Today Geraldine and I were doing house work when I said, "I better run out and see if there is any mail." And she said, "Do you get mail out here on Sunday?" That is the first intimation I had it was Sunday! Mary M has gone to Madison to her family over the weekend, and being alone I wasn't thinking. ... Geraldine is coming to stay all night. MM thought I'd feel safter.

Uplift

(1992 June 12)

I had a distinguished caller last week, John ? - the one who built the library and pool, etc. I'll have to put his name in when I find it [but never did -- Brewer]. I think it was all at church, as he said he thot he and Bill Birkett just needed for one to take one side, the other the other, and they could carry me [in a wheelchair] up the church steps to my pew.

Trash run

(1992 March 18)

I realize my memory is not very solid, but at times there is compensation: to wit: I was taking my nap when I heard a noise of vehicle going past. Suddenly realized it was Monday and garbage was not out. Springing from my bed like a startled deer, I dashed into the bathroom, dressed complete with coat and leather work mittens, quickly went to the garage, where I saw the bag and set it at the curb. Then getting a small sack, got the kitchen garbage into it and now await collection!

Baghdad

(1991 January 22)

Suddenly we are at war. I always thought of Baghdad as a mysterious Persian city where strange stories came from. I watched a while on CNN and must say all the soldiers were smiling - maybe to the camera.

Wine

(1991 January 14)

After attending the Free Methodist Church for 6-7 years, [a friend of mine] finally joined the Church Sunday. Before that she thot she wanted to be able to have a glass of wine now and then when it was served, but at last she decided she would do without it. As she follows Jesus in other things, I should think she could drink wine, as I think he did. But I cannot put my finger on the verse in the Bible where it specifically says so; so need not bring it up.

The Necklace

(1991 January 14)

I thot I'd read that old diary of Daddy's, 1930.... Nearly all his beginning court cases and before we were married.... He said he was giving me a silver and amythest necklace for my birthday, and I am so ashamed to say not only do I not have it, but I don't remember it. (Oh dear!) Perhaps I lost it.

Canoe crash

(1999 August 6)

Last weekend Jan and Bob lashed their canoe to the top of their car, took a picnic lunch to the Dells, and went for a ride. Later on at home, Jan forgot the canoe was on the car and walked into it, giving her head such a bad rap it sent her to bed for the day.

Block Party

(1999 August 6)

Stuck in my door was a Flyer telling a neighbor is trying to get the neighbors together by having a Block Party the 26th. I am to bring $5, my lawn chair, and a dish to pass. So well meaning, I'll try to go. The trouble is, I never remember names. What to do?

Quirks

(1989 September 8)

Today Geraldine [the cleaning lady] was back - the TV was pulled out and I wondered why it wouldn't work - lights were turned off wrong places - my desk cushion was front to back - but ah! all so very beautifully cleaned. All my little quirks remembered too. "Not too much water near the kitchen-table casters as they are iron and do rust the floor" - etc. "I remembered!"
