But I kept the Ripon Memory Book, and one fine day after I was married a while, I burned the whole she-bang in our coal furnace in the utility room [on Beaumont Avenue]. All the things in this book suddenly became very trivial and unimportant. More and more I felt how silly I'd feel if anyone read it, especially Lorin. I felt silly myself. Whatever prompted me to spend time on it?

Memory book
(1980 memoirs)
Well -- now -- [when a freshman at Ripon College] one of the first things I bought for $5.00 and which I could not well afford was a large memory book with stiff red covers decorated with a big red R on the cover. Inside was ruled spaces for such things as teachers, friends, social functions, dates, and the like. I filled it in the first year or two and then lost interest.

Sunday School

I am again going to have my class in needlework in the Auditorium this fall, if enough sign up. Almost wish they wouldn't - I have so many projects lined up. Thought I was all set on Sunday School book and at last minute Anna Lord wanted to combine her class with mine and take younger group, so now I am short 3 books ... but think they are out of print though excellent. So I must dream up a course until I hear [from publisher] or get new ones we can afford all around. Also on layman Sundays [when no priest here] I take the Morning Prayer session of the combined Sunday School. Small, true, but the preparation about the same.

I read such a poor book of Daddy's - Eight Questions, I think it was. I told MM to throw it, but she said no, she would hand it in at the new [used] book store downtown. I said in that case, erase "Poor" I had written at the top. Craig Rice [author].

Block party people

I invited my neighbor over Thursday, the one at whose house we met for the Block Party. As I recall her conversation, she has six sons, two of whom are twins; all are teachers and write books, one on Reading. Name is Richegels. One is teaching in Kansas City.

I opened your letter to add the very latest fungi news before it leaves Wis. Today the topic on WHA Radio Call-in was edible mushrooms, esp. the morel. Many called in with problems and I learned always to cook them. Then the guest for the day from Forest Products Lab (I think) told of reading a book years ago by Alex. Smith, Michigan, "The Guru of Michigan," with description and drawings and what not to eat. Other works were mentioned, so I called in to say there was a new list just out and gave yours. He had to know the publisher and may send for it. Do you think I should charge 10%?

Yesterday walking across the grass to turn on the hose I had to jump when a little frog flew into the air ahead of me with big HOPS. He hid under the cement trough under the faucett. Where did he come from? And why all alone? Charles Forte wrote a book about such miracles called Lo! which I gave you and should like to read again and lend Bill. "Teleportation," he says.

Dante debunked

When I think about your new work on Dante, I am not too happy about it. I liked to think of Dante and Beatrice as two lovers from classic times. Now you will debunk them, and things may never be the same again. Beatrice will turn into a thought, and Dante just a thinker, and where will us romanticists be then? No one has got at Romeo and Juliet yet.

After the P. O. today I went to the News Stand for the last time. Bot a couple books including some Moliere's plays. 40% off. Many of them are ripped to pieces and the covers sent back as they do, a thing that seems a terrible waste to me.

Now let's talk about Christmas. [Lawrence], I took your enclosed offer on the Marvel Special Editions to the newsstand when I next went to town and showed it to the owner of the store. Frank showed me the special editions for $1.50 and also pointed out by comparing it with a 25-cent book that the story and drawing were identical, only larger in the big book. Then he laughed like a fool and said he wondered who would buy a thing like that. Putting it that way, it does seem slightly preposterous, don't you think?

Coffee cake

Well now I am at the kitchen table, having got up [from sickbed] for elevenses. I tried the coffee cake - a small piece and it is delicious. Joy [of Cooking], p. 589, the Quick, Rich, Moist Coffee Cake with Honey Bee Topping. My first attempt. Just the nuts 39 cents! A small bag. I will freeze some so you can have some.

Le petit chose

Feeling rather at sixes and sevens a few days ago I started translating Le Petit Chose. It is really fun and easy. Have you read it? A little boy played Robinson Crusoe with his parrot which he left behind on a boat when his family moved to Lyons. Maybe today I'll find he recovered it. I do better when I read it aloud.

Unasked for advice: (1) Decide to part with some of your books. They are more of a liability to you than an asset. It seems to me you could sell at your bookshop or give to library those you haven't looked at in years and perhaps never will. We hear of people who so turn their homes into museums collecting antiques that they are impeded in living. Can be true with books. Or your could bring 50-100 of them with you every time you come [to Richland Center] and give them to library here.
