Lorin always left a few dollars for grocery shopping, and one afternoon I went out to a grocery store in the block to shop. When I came up the stairs, I noticed our door slightly open. It flashed thru my mind, this must be the janitor showing the apartment, as I had heard similar tales. Carrying the tall bag of groceries, I stood in the doorway, expectantly looking at a young man in a soft gray suit. "Get in here!" he said. "Get in here!" I was dumbfounded and did walk in. As he walked out, I saw the top dresser drawer open and realized finally he was a thief and I had been robbed.

LeHew house

The LeHew house is being dismantled, and I have been over there - bought a chair to replace that big striped one that Grandfather paid 500 for years ago. So LL says - or was it 300 (?).

Soup

We had a fine #12 turkey, and now I have cut it all off the bones, covered them with water, added diced onion, carrot, celery, parsley, lemon slice, and tomorrow we'll have
soup. How's that for economy? You were brought up to be frugal, so it should come easy to you. I will never spend much, unless I am absolutely carried away, and this is indeed a rare occasion.

Detour

The Seminary [Street] bridge is unsafe and closed and being worked on, therefore all traffic to clinic etc. goes by our house, including school buses, trucks, etc. Big difference. People walk over the dam. Cabs charge 50 cents instead of 40. I was going to town to do a few errands but doesn't seem wise to add a dollar to my small purchases, so may rest up and go with LL at one some other day. He works late - TAXES.

Summer clothes

Jan was horrified when she brought all of my [summer] clothes over [from Grove St. to the Schmitt Home] in one big shopping bag. Is this all you have? How would I go shopping? By catalog, I guess. I am very easy on clothes and they last a long time.

Apple butter glasses

I went to Walmart with Jan to order glasses to put apple butter in when they have their semi annual Bee at the orchard. I said, "You could have done that by phone," and she was vexed she had not thot of it or the time saved.

Hot water bottle

Tomorrow, Saturday, Jan and I will go to the Square to buy me a Hot Water Bottle, which has been laid aside for me from a new shipment. My electric blanket is not enough to warm my feet and I cannot sleep with cold feet.

This morning your letter was in my box.... I enjoyed reading about Florence ... and those girls who wear $1000 blouses. I never heard of such prices! Tho I do remember one day walking in Manchesters [in Madison], looking at fancy blouses and being told they were $50-80 because they were hand embroidered. As one who embroiders, I thot they were poor examples of the art. Maybe what Florence needs is a Woolworths?

Free pie

There is an auction of hospital chairs, tables, etc. at the Community Building, served up with sandwiches, pie and coffee this afternoon, but as you see, I am not there. I can't understand the auctioneer for one thing. One year it had a sale, and I am much better buying things. Besides, I don't care to eat pie late in the day - an odd time for me.

Life in the old girl yet

All our friends are slipping away. When I hear from Langdon [Divers, highschool friend], I read of all our classmates dead or nearly so. ... I marvel that I, never A+ in health, am still here. I do have my problems, of course. Yesterday and today I feel an ache all over, like rheumatism. But I was downtown on errands, hair done, etc. God bless us all.

Hitchhiker

In Schulz [dime store], Kathryn started feeling weak and still wanted to go to Super Value [grocery], so asked a clerk if she would drive her there if she were getting out of work soon!!! Clerk said No. Then Edy Symons, owner Indian Hollow Green House, took her to Super Value, gave her a ride home - carried her groceries up the [long flight of] steps! And Kathryn, instead of feeling ashamed of asking, just feels she was very lucky to get rides. How she can.

Long & hard work

I never realized how long and hard some people work until lately. Anna [Polly's schoolgirl] works 10 hours helping the bakers, wrapping the rolls, etc. Cleans the counters, mops the floor. ... When Father Maier took me there shopping [at the new supermarket], a small girl lifted our bags from the cart to the car trunk. I asked, "Do you do this all day?" and she said, "Only 6 hours." I could hardly lift one bag. I get very tired filling a list in a big store - so far to walk back if you forget something. But fresh vegetables and same sales.

Bentwood bonaza?

MM had a problem of what we were going to use for chairs at her Xmas dinner. So I went to Byron Turner's auction and got 4 plain solid oak chairs. Then I saw an ad for 6 Bentwood Chairs and I went to see them - at the Gnome King's Castle. They are like ice cream parlor chairs. $30 each; all the pieces of the chair are made of bent poles. Seat is round. She may not want these at all. [Not clear if Polly bought them or if Mary wanted them. The original bentwood chairs were made in Austria by Thronet and are now a high-dollar collectible. The "client's chair" in Lorin's office was a genuine Thronet (with label) and now has a place of honor in my study.]

One day I was feeling unusually well and thot I could take Dee for a walk to the Foot Bridge. Betty Brindley happened to see me and invited me in, and besides having a good chat she gave me excellent Italian Beans bought at Farmers' Market at Court House Square at 7:30 a.m.

Now let's talk about Christmas. [Lawrence], I took your enclosed offer on the Marvel Special Editions to the newsstand when I next went to town and showed it to the owner of the store. Frank showed me the special editions for $1.50 and also pointed out by comparing it with a 25-cent book that the story and drawing were identical, only larger in the big book. Then he laughed like a fool and said he wondered who would buy a thing like that. Putting it that way, it does seem slightly preposterous, don't you think?

Helen [Kay, aunt] wrote the Grants (Vinje & Richard) have a new station wagon. All very well. But I always heard you save money if you get one that is even one month old. I suppose some one has to start with a new one. but don't buy a wreck.
