To read & doze

(1980 memoirs)
Here [on Frankie's couch] she would sit to read because the light was good until sleep overcame her, afternoon or evening, and then she would doze off covered with a shawl, mouth open, not a pretty sight, no - but rather amusing and endearing.

Over 90

(1994 May 10)
I am often sleepy.  Does this have anything to do with being over 90?  Just refused invitation to kick a Beach Ball around.

Nightmare phoning

(1967 March 20)
Last night I dreamed I was phoning, facing breakfast alcove, when the ceiling came down and an electric shock caught my hand in the phone making it limp.  I called MM from upstairs, and she came, and I told her to get Joe R. to fix the ceiling.  Then you came in all covered with a yellow oilskin, no holes for face (sort of KKK) - but I knew you right away.  You said, "What's all this?"  I said, "A mess.  Where did you come from?"  You said, "Oh, I have been staying with friends who have a little cottage over here on the Wabash.  Been doing a little writing."  This kept pegging at me - Wabash?  Here in Wisconsin?  Until I finally work up.  Queer.

Ruth Nee

(1966 August 10)
[The night after the operation] I phoned Ruth [Nee RN] about 10 p.m. and after learning all was well, we both [PK & MM] got a good night's rest.

Sleeper

(1993 July)

The maid who got me water and took my dirty clothes asked, "Do you have to read before you go to sleep?" - "Is there another way?" - "I just touch my head to the pillow and I'm asleep." - "You're lucky."

Heavy duty

(1993 August, Monday, I think, 8:45 a.m.)

What a morning so far. Outside dark and glum and threatening something dire. Inside nearly as bad. The real underlying idea I feel sure is to get everybody up for breakfast to avoid carrying trays. I heard them call (she probably) "Polly, breakfast is ready." - "I'm not coming. I need sleep." - "You have to come and eat, and sleep later." - No response. So along came a kind but immense woman who says, "Polly, you have to get up for breakfast." I said I needed sleep because people were flashing lights in my eyes all night waking me up. She said, "That was Beverly, and Beverly is one of our best workers. It is required by law to check up on each person every ten minutes while sleeping." - PK: ... "About breakfast - I don't care for a large table bearing a tray full of food, but I would eat a dish of oatmeal only." - "That's what you said. But the government requires us to serve each person with the correct number of calories for each meal." - "Really!" - "Yes, it is so." - By this time I had persuaded her to sit over by my desk with window open 6 inches so I could eat without inhaling her perfume, which at last may have been necessary. About 300 pounds, no kidding.

Tour

(1993 February)

Today after lunch this nice man at our table suddenly came to my side and said, "You said you haven't looked over the whole place and wanted to; so I thot now would be a good time to do it." Off we went, and I think four floors - up and down with the elevator - a room of nice looking people being fed, and the laundry washing and ironing. I became very tired. ... He showed me the place all right. I was so tired. Kicked off shoes and fell on bed and slept instantly.

Popcorn

(1993 February 6)

"All those who want popcorn may come to the kitchen and get it." I was taking a good nap.

Flasher

A girl on duty goes with flashlight and flashes in every face. Is this to determine life or death? I don't know. Figure out a way to scare her out of it for me.

Box lunch

(1992 December)

Yesterday I slept thru dinner, and Jean fixed me up a box lunch - sandwich and apple. Good to be where there are people, and it is also good to be home, which is where I wish I were.

Exit Annie

(1992 September)

One night I opened the door, and Annie, who is a black kitten, darted out, and MM hurt her arm trying to catch her from elbow to shoulder. Has been to doctor but still very tender. She does everything for me, and a good thing, as I can do less and less for myself - just tired. What I do pretty well is sleep.

Wheelchair

(1992 March 7)

In spite of pill at 11, work up bright at 1:30. What to do? Add a note to you. I have my wheel chair, a cheerful red. It is to save my heart from walking to living room to see TV. MM is proud of it and likes me with her. I am in no pain but at times feel something is going on in heart regions.

Tentout

(1991 July 6)

Last evening Jan called for me and took me to the campus to see the grounds covered with small tents for one or two occupants pitched all over the place. So many colors and shapes! I believe there were 750 bicyclists following the Wisconsin River, pedaling here from Prairie du Chien. $125 for meals at campus and camping grounds.

Hot water bottle

(1991 January's end)

Tomorrow, Saturday, Jan and I will go to the Square to buy me a Hot Water Bottle, which has been laid aside for me from a new shipment. My electric blanket is not enough to warm my feet and I cannot sleep with cold feet.

Ticked off

(1986 July 12)

I did a miserable thing today. The blue pillow on davenport was losing feathers and a bother. So I made a new cover for the inside pillow of ticking. On the machine. Got it all done and was very disappointed to feel how hard it was - not nice for naps any more. I didn't know the ticking would make it so hard. At least we are spared feathers all over.

Nap

(1986 August 26)

I fell asleep during sermon! [marginal note with no context]

Lying down to sleep

(1973 November 30)

Another very odd feeling is being sick alone in the house. Comes time to put the light out and I think, Well, I wonder if I'll wake up here or some other place. Often takes courage, but there's an element of curiosity, too. Is Heaven real? I wonder how it will really be.

The hairdresser

(1963 October 7)

Auntie Mabel [living with caregiver] had been dressed by Mrs. S. in view of our visit and looked fine in lavender sweater. Lorin: How nice you look, auntie. M: Thank you, dear. L: Your hair is so pretty. M: I just had a permanent. The hairdresser fixed it. L: It looks very nice. Well, shall we go upstairs and have our visit? M: No, no. You can't go up there. L: Why not? M: She's asleep. L: Who's asleep? M: The hairdresser.

Sunday night

(1955 March 13)

Sunday night, and after a dull day, which seems to be what Daddy needed to face the week tomorrow, we are on the verge of retiring. Maggie already is tucked in, not too sleepy perhaps, as she was exhausted and slept until 10 this morning. Daddy is working a puzzle of about 500 pieces, every one blue, and get one piece about every hour.

Quiet time

(1954 August 12)

Perhaps you can be slightly useful and do a little on the moving. You might get some of your own stuff over there, for instance. I am not planning a thing for you to do. Only scat so I can take my nap. It is nice at the park - maybe bring swim suits?
