(Lyndon 3)
We lived alone in the country and looking back I can say I am now ashamed of the way I treated him. I was playing with my doll family and he had nothing to do so followed me around. I would blow up at him and tell him to play elsewhere. Isn't it strange miserable actions often stay with us all our lives?

Tricks
(Dogs 20)
One day Skip called us outside to watch Vica do her tricks. We expected to hear her speak and watch her sit up -- the old stanbys -- but Skip had taught her besides to jump thru a hoop, to ride on a fast moving wagon, to heel, to come, to stay, to stand, to sit -- all requisites of training for the next dog show.

Arrival from KC
(Dogs 6)
All four of us [Ruth and the Kays] went to the station to meet the train and get the dogs. We let them out on the Court House Lawn and they ran around like crazy, never stopping, wild with joy, tumbling with freedom. It was evening, and I was worried for fear they would in their delight tear into the street, but they knew the grass was safer, and soon we gathered them up and went off home with our pets.

Cricket
(1911?)
Last night [in 1980] when I had counted quite enough sheep, I got to thinking about the dogs in my life. First of all I can remember coming home from school one afternoon and finding my mother sitting down, laughing, and holding her apron down on all three sides as well as she could, trying to keep something underneath, someone who, trying to escape, was making quite a lively job of it, squirming, fighting. "Guess! Guess!" ske kept saying. But I could only stand there staring, until finally she let him out and I took him to my heart. This was Cricket, a small Black & Tan Terrier.

No sport
(1980 memoirs)
As we were more and more together, I learned to understand what he was really like. Now and then he would say someting desparaging about sports -- "spending your life chasing a little ball around." I was dimly puzzled, having gone with a couple of football players a little. Gradually I got to learn he was no good at outdoor games.

My girl
(1980 memoirs)
While living on Ruepings' Estate, my brother and I often played Hide & Seek with the Rueping kids and their friends. One summer night Boobie and I were kneeling behind a bush when he gave me a very sweet kiss and said, "You're my girl now, Carrie. Will you write to me when I go away to school in the fall?"

Deceit
(1980 memoirs)
I must have been in 6th grade or so, going to country school, when I learned about deceit. It was spring and we were going to have a picnic lunch with games afterward. A rather new girl, Alice, said to me, "What are you going to wear tomorrow?" I said I hadn't given it any thought, to which she answered, "Let's not dress up at all. I am going to wear just some old thing I wear around home. Sitting on the ground and playing games, we might get our good Sunday clothes all torn and dirty." I agreed and surprised my mother by insisting on wearing quite an old dress. Imagine my innocent amazement when I laid eyes on Alice, beautiful in a brand-new dress outshining us all, especially me!

Dancing
(1980 memoirs)
When Tommy (Doris) Tucker [later Hamley] and I danced a little in the living room, Frankie did come in and say we'd have to stop because the floor was "too weak to stand it." [She may have been right; even in the 1920s it was a very old house, probably built in the 1860s.]

Playmates
(1993 May 5, memoirs)
One time [when we lived at Green Lake] my parents were worried I had no playmate, so I was dressed prettily and taken half way to Lone Tree Point, where another girl my age met me. I recall the white clovers. We were unloaded and left alone for 2 or 3 hours. We tried to play together but very dull and my mother said I never had to go again. ... We lived in a "house in the woods." I recall it had a porch on two sides of the house, and Lyn's buggy was there for naps.

Boo boo
(1993 July, Rueping memoirs)
One day when we were playing hide and seek and hiding by pairs, I was with young Rueping. I think they called him Boo Boo [Bube] - it meant boy in German (?) - so we were hiding and he softly kissed me on the cheek and said, "Your're my girl now." I did not reply in any way but thot, "What is going to become of this?" Not a thing ever did nor did I ever tell anyone until this instant but - was I prepared to be a millionaress? Not exactly, I guess.

William
(1993 July, Rueping memoir)
In a cottage beside [Fred's], fifty feet apart or so, was his brother William, a pleasant, well spoken person who had a son and adopted another, Stephen Lynch, so he would have a playmate. These boys were fine felows, and I used to play hide and seek with them. All spoke German.

Pleasing Frank Parsons
(1992 Memoirs)
Once or twice my father came to see how I was getting on, and we were both rather afraid of him. He came to eat and she [Olga] made a point of buying meat for noon dinner, but he slept at the hotel. I was obliged to write him once a week and saw one of the letters where I said, "It snowed and snowed, father." I guess news was scarce and I knew he would have no interest in the doll outfits Florence Fenski and I would make of Aunt Olga's scraps, when Florence said, turn it up there and put a feather right here, and it will be the cutest little hat you ever thaw."

Euchre
(1929 August, Buffalo, WY
The edge on the friendships were pretty thin this afternoon. Vi and Jeannette [Jurgeson] were going to play euchre and wanted me to play (Tommy was driving down a perilous mountain about then, but we had to have some diversion, hence the cards). She was quite horrid about teaching me, but I tried hard to be noble -- aren't you proud of me for holding my temper? Please do be -- it was noble.

Costume wardrobe
(1966 October)
I am sending the little girls [Gail & Elizabeth] a costume for Hallowe'en.... I only wish I had time to make two good outfits, but it is getting cool now and I have work to do on Lawrence's outfit. Just want you to know the Miss Patches [an Oz book character] took hours of work, and I sent it with a hope you will take it with you when you leave [Colorado] and have the girls start a costume wardrobe. It is such a joy to dress up even if it isn't Hallowe'en, as well we know.

bible trivia
(1994 January 20)
This afternoon I wandered into the dining room, where people were sitting in a circle ... Those in the circle were playing Bible Trivia, and I was surprised to find myself the star performer. All those childhood story books, some so beautiful; I wish I never gave them away. [Actually, Skip still has them.]

richest man
(1993 November)
In the lobby I was playing checkers with a man who told me the richest man in the world lives on the third floor. I have forgotten the name. He must have lots of mail.

Bridge again
(1993 October)
Upstairs to play bridge, a poor player but encouraged. The Pribenaus live here, and Mr. P. 'Skip's geometry teacher] was my partner, very good not to point out my errors until asked. No money was bet anyway. She [Mrs., Skip's civics teacher] was sick but better now, and we nodded later.

Bridge
(1993 February6)
I heard on Tuesday we are to play Bridge. What that means, I do not know. A Teacher coming in? Also I was asked on a survey if I played. I said Auction but could stand practice in Contract.

Crack the whip
(1992 November 14)
[On a notecard showing Winslow Homer's painting of schoolboys playing "Snap the Whip":] I have played this in grade school. Quite a jolt if one is at the end.
