We studied Merchant of Venice, Macbeth, Hamlet.... One semester we each took a magazine -- the Literary Digest maybe. This [class] lasted three years and all were sorry to see the end.

What Lorin thought
(1980 memoirs)
Looking back on it all, I try to think what Lorin thought about Frankie, about her house and all -- And I have an idea he was really enchanted. When you know he loved A Kiss for Cinderella, Peter Pan, Snow White and the Seven Dorfs (that's the way Skip said it) you can guess what he thot of when stepped in the door. Charming, whimsical, amusing, a seeker of truth and of love, he cared about me.

To read & doze

Here [on Frankie's couch] she would sit to read because the light was good until sleep overcame her, afternoon or evening, and then she would doze off covered with a shawl, mouth open, not a pretty sight, no - but rather amusing and endearing.

Minnie solitaire

[Minnie, my mother, was] solitary and none of the neighbors good enough to invite over. To tell the truth, that's the way it was. She was above them in education, had taught school, and read every book she could. She even tried Christian Science, but it never quite came off.

Here comes the lad

Every morning we got up at 6:30 - breakfast at 7 - a tense time wondering if the paper boy would come with the paper in time to be read at the table. Sometimes Lorin would be oh-so-quaint and say, "Ah, here comes the lad." Or I might.

Location, location

Since you first mentioned the possibility of Lawrence, I have been trying to lay my hands on a map to find out where it is located, but only found it yesterday. The maps of Kansas we had did not give it. But now I found my old black atlas book and located it. Seems to be near Topeka, Kansas City and Leavenworth. Also the Missouri River near there. As map is so small, cannot tell whether river goes thru Kansas at that point or whether lines are railroads. You will have to expand on it or get Chamber of Commerce of Kansas to fill me in. Looks to me like a good location - better than center of state, for instance.

ABC book

So glad to get your letter, and I have been trying to get some pix to fill out Lawrence's ABC book, but we take almost no magazines that have pictures any more; however, I think that pictures of the family would be interesting to include - E for Elizabeth, G for Gail, M for Mama, etc. This does not mean I have stopped looking, and will send on any I come across.

bible trivia

This afternoon I wandered into the dining room, where people were sitting in a circle ... Those in the circle were playing Bible Trivia, and I was surprised to find myself the star performer. All those childhood story books, some so beautiful; I wish I never gave them away. [Actually, Skip still has them.]

Decubitus

What a time! Dorothea, this older maid, bathed me and saw the skin broken on left hip, the side I lie on. So tonight, another mattress on top of mine, like porcupine back [or egg carton], which I must have until sore on hip heals. ... I have a decubitus ulcer from lying on my left side (reading) too much. Gradually my pleasures are stripped away in my old age.

Books, new books, are not much fun. On "Chapter a Day" [WHA radio program] now we have one about sex disease. A wife, Clara ("Burden of Proof") commits suicide. No one knows why, but when her husband thinks he is affected, he goes to his doctor son. Isn't that jolly?

Literacy

I called the woman who is organizing teachers for reading class [to volunteer] and was told there are about 3 to 4000 in Richland County who cannot read. They may read and write their names etc. but not to read the paper, book etc. She was very glad I called and did not press me, so must have plenty of younger workers. The method is phonics. Well - that's that.

Juggling act

Went down to read Wind in the Willows to Portia [at Schmidt home]. I worried how it would work out, as one hand was needed to hold amplifier, one to hold the talking part, and one the book. But I go her to hold the amplifier and put the book on my knees and read for half an hour. She sat with a rapt expression, and I was glad, but next time 20 minutes will have to do.

Trollope

Trollope is a very discerning writer when it comes to depicting human nature. Orley Farm, a big book, I was thinking of speed-reading but find it too interesting for that. By putting it on the stand you gave me for Xmas, I read at the kitchen table quite well. Then wiggling down under my blanket later, I find a mystery the right size.

The Oxford Movement

I am reading a solid book called The Oxford Movement, which I recall LL's reading many times. Once will be enough for me tho I will come out with lesser understanding. It is somewhat a psychological analysis of Cardinal Newman. Dupuis regarded Christianity as a corruption of primitive astronomy. Christ = sun, Virgin Mary = virgo, and the Cross was the intersection of equator and ecliptic. Pusey was horrified.

A little French

I am enjoying reading a little French every day and usually translate after I go to bed. Often I just get the idea and let it go at that. Often I go for the literal. Sometimes the differences between what I thot it was and what it turned out to be after looking up the words is hilarious! Now I am on Daphne & Chole. The book is falling apart, and I feel I should be using an older copy. Mine is special.

Mislaid

I started a pocket book to read in bed and then could not find it. Went on to others. Yesterday I found it in my waste basket under my night table! Now I wish I could find my old oil tube paints. Gone. I pulled out a box upstairs beyond the ironing board and the thing flapped upside down and a plate I had used for a pallet years ago splintered - a mess! But not my old oils. I am too tired to look any more today.
