Launch

(1930 June)
We continued north [on our honeymoon] the next day until Lorin said, "Let's see what this is like" and turned into the driveway of a summer resort.  The woman in charge showed us two cottages, one was the usual little cheaply built house, while the other was a large launch, evidently no longer fit for the lake, now made into a cottage.  We were amused and delighted and signed for it at once.  I believe in an old photo album there is a picture of me sitting on the entrance steps.  I think Lorin was wearing plus fours.  We swam, went boating and I believe my son was conceived there.

wrong way

(1980 memoirs)
Then one spring day, or week-end, we were at a Merriman [fraternity] house party, on Green Lake I think it was.  People were doing this and that on the afternoon.  Seeing an idle row boat, he asked me if I'd like to go for a ride.  I said sure and got in.  He got in too, took the oars, pushed off, and started rowing backwards!  I was dumbfounded.  A couple of his pals on shore were highly amused!  I said, before thinking, "Don't you even know how to row?"  He was laughing too and soon started pulling the right way and we had a nice row.  I often think of little things like that.

Eagle scout

(1980 memoirs)
Lorin was an Eagle Scout and often referred to it, his camp on Silver Lake and all the rest.  One time he told me about how he and another boy rowed across the lake every day for mail and supplies.

Hopeles

(1980 memoirs)
Alfred, Lorin's father, took him to a country club, possibly Tripoli, put him in the hands of a teacher [to learn sports].  What happened exactly he would never say except only now and then in a scathing remark.  Yet we would love going to a UW football game and dance afterward.  And he would often tune into a game Saturday afternoon on the radio to hear as he was stamping.

Ottery

(1991 September 11)

Geraldine has news today. She won $100 on a lottery ticket, from SuperValue I think it was. I am glad for her. One arm is numb and she has doctor bills to pay. She was just in here telling me about Alma's silo burning - my beautician. It's the silage, not the whole thing.

Cottages

(1991 September 2)

[On Labor Day] People are driving by with boats today, probably to their cottages on some lake. I have talked to women who have them, and they say it's just like keeping up two houses.

First fish

(1975 July 17)

I do not recall catching many fish. The only time I did, I think might have been at Green Lake. I dimly remember being in a row boat fishing with my parents. My mother just went along for the ride. I remember her yelling, "Frank! Frank! She'e got a fish!" And I think your grandfather pulled it in and it was a sun fish, sort of flat with a yellow belly. I was small & scared.

No fun

(1973 November 18)

Learn as much about as many things as you can and a lot about a very few. I know if I were a good bridge player and enjoyed bridge parties, I would be asked out to play. The times I have gone, I have been very bored, very tired, and a migraine the next day. That crowd is not for me. If it were, my circle would be wider. Just so I might have bowling friends, golfing friends, etc.

Cramming and cramping

(1958 October 17)

At the Homecoming game which we lost to Reedsburg 39-7 she [MM] ate the following: 1 hot dog (Friday), 1 root beer, box chicelets, brot from home, big bag of pop corn, and 3 apples, finished off with Susan Sanner's Ski [sic] and a pal's coffee. The following Saturday found her abed with violent stomach cramps, sacrificing opportunity to earn money helping the crew put on storm windows.

Sliding down scale

(1958 October 10, Homecoming)

Yesterday after all I went to the Executive Mansion and drank my tea. Also got my 5-year pin. We left Richland Center at noon and some of the girls had eaten no lunch so on the way home we stopped at the Sport Bowl and had a sandwich and watched the end of the World Series. "Well," I said to myself, "here am I a leader of youth, just having received my 5-year pin for service, sitting in a bar watching the World Series with a lot of truck drivers." And I mused upon Life.

A fish story

(1955 May 23)

Yesterday Kassie Lenz came over and I took the girls fishing down by the footbridge. We had one pole and 5-minute turns. Kas had a strike and pulled a small fish out but he immediately got off the hook. When M's turn came, he bit again and she pulled him in. A 6" bullhead. Was she ever happy!! We brought him home and revived him in a pail of water. When Mr. Lenz came for Kas, he took him along for Le Hew's cat.

Medical notes

[From Polly's schoolgirl:] Lorna's high-school age brother badly hurt in football when three boys ran into him with helmets. An operation on spine they think is going to save him from being a cripple. Then her grandmother had an eye operation, but this turned out well, and she is happy she can again see.

A reluctant librarian

(1995 January)

Once I took a correspondence course in something from the University of Wisconsin. I think it was library science. I stayed at Ripon and believe I became a school librarian. It was a lot of work in the stacks. One day some friends were going to Green Lake swimming and they insisted I come too. They accused me of not having been in Green Lake all year, and that was true. So I gave in and enjoyed it very much. I was never glad I had become a school librarian. Those using the library got along just fine without me. The English classes use part time in library lessons now.
