Literacy

(1989 September 6)

I called the woman who is organizing teachers for reading class [to volunteer] and was told there are about 3 to 4000 in Richland County who cannot read. They may read and write their names etc. but not to read the paper, book etc. She was very glad I called and did not press me, so must have plenty of younger workers. The method is phonics. Well - that's that.

Gravy

(1989 September 6)

Babel

(1989 November 2)

[P.S.] Still on the service [for All Souls Day] - everyone was asked to read or say the names of the departed out loud at the same time. Mine and Jean's and perhaps others were read by the priests. I kept thinking they were in a hurry for their suppers. All at once--

Uncle Max

(1989 November 2, All Souls Day)

I had handed in my list [of departed relatives to be prayed for]. For a long time I could not think of Uncle Max, my mother's brother. Suddenly in the living room I said right out loud, "MAX!" Hadn't thought of him in years.
