Time to write

(1992 December)

The woman sitting at my table ... is a little odd. Many people here have been sent by their doctors. Margaret Scott pushes her sister around and around until 4 p.m. when relieved by a school girl and then she can write. [Scott was a prolific local historian.]

Knitting class

(1992 December)

The knitting class [that Polly volunteered to give at the Schmitt Home] never got started. I talked to the woman in charge of activities, very interested but not started. Remarked supplies could be at hand at Vergil and Connies, a RC store. Well - I offered.

Box lunch

(1992 December)

Yesterday I slept thru dinner, and Jean fixed me up a box lunch - sandwich and apple. Good to be where there are people, and it is also good to be home, which is where I wish I were.

Prayer helps

(1992 ?November)

Sometimes I think how useless this all is - it's about time for me to be dying anyway, and I am performing no useful service any more, unless it is prayer.

Clueless

(1992 ?November)

We kept appointment at hospital with young lady who ran a heart machine. I lay on a hard couch on a hard pillow while she ran her heart machine, which made a noise and showed the heart beating in a nearby movie. When the hour was over, I said, "How did I do?" And she said, "I have no idea. That is for the docor to say."

Fire drill

(1992 December)

We had a fire drill a few minutes ago. I am near an exit so not much of a distance.

So long

(1992 December)

Geraldine is going to her son's in Florida for a week - said "so long." If you say "Goodbye," you do not expect to see the person again, her father told her.

Library blues

(1992 December)

I asked to see the library and was taken to 4th floor. Very cold & deserted.

Keeping it warm

(1992 December)

Mr. Fix-it

(1992 December)

A Fix-it man just left. Trouble was plug not pushed in far enough on TV.

Bird count

(1992 December 21)

It's Bird Count day in RC and groups go out in cars to see what birds they can see - kinds, etc. Jan's turn to bake cookies.

Sing-along?

(1992 December 11)

The cooking here is excellent - one thing. Ruth Williams came one afternoon and Jan always. I lay down for a little nap after dinner, and 3 people came in to see if Iwere ill or if I would come to a Sing-Along.

Bathing machine

(1992 December 11)

Was scooped off for a bath in tub with a chair that lifts up and deposits victim in warm water adjusted for his taste.

Tabletalk

(1992 December)

[When Mary Margaret suddenly died, Polly went to live at the Schmidt Home.] A nice man at my table has trouble lifting his spoon to his mouth and sometimes bursts into tears, so sad.

Xmas list

(1992 November 16)

I think most people thot it was very dull to get money for Xmas last year. What do you people want this year? Let me have your lists. As for me, a few postcards and stamps. Something curious Sally made. Summer pyjamas with long sleeves. Black tea not in bags. A subscription to a woman's magazine. Your turn to think.

Georgette

(1992 November 16)

How am I? Well, far from good. I think I'd describe it as weak. "I eat, I drink, but not as I should" - taken from an old song, "Georgette, Georgette, why can't you be good.?"

Updating

(1992 November 16?)

This might be Nov. 16, 1992. I don't go out nor see many people, but I could pay more attention to the date on the paper - that would be the Wisconsin State Journal.

Crack the whip

(1992 November 14)

[On a notecard showing Winslow Homer's painting of schoolboys playing "Snap the Whip":] I have played this in grade school. Quite a jolt if one is at the end.

Kafeeklatsch

(1992 November 14)

In the morning a popular thing for girls to do is go to the bakery, get coffee and a roll or bun, and sit and exchange gossip. MM does this sometimes. Mary Speidel [Polly's other caregiver] was thinking of it today, but it is pretty sharp out.

Afterthought

(1992 November 4)

Dark and miserable out, and I am glad I'm not getting married on a day like this.

January 10, 2012

Catplay

(1992 October 27)

I said, "What is Annie doing?" MM said - "in the bathroom wopping the hot water bottle corks as they hang over the shelf." Very dull just now.

January 9, 2012

Annie up a tree

(1992 October 26)

Guess what? Annie, our adventurous black kitten, climbed to the top of the lilac bush, and MM had to run upstairs, open the window, take out the screen, reach out and bring in that Annie. That kitten is always up to something!

January 8, 2012

Bat bite

(1992 October 25)

MM tried to be kind to bat, picked it up to save its life, but it misunderstood her motive and bit her, and she now goes to hospitals both in RC and Madison.

Lost ornaments

(1992 October 1)

Beaulard, a giant of a man, found the storm windows to the kitchen. Another look for the Xmas Tree Decorations, but gone gone Gone. Some were so old - the swan, the dwarf - too bad. Bill and I took them off last year, and he took them up [to the attic] and one would think they'd be there.

Comeback

(1992 October 1)

Cat news first: Annie, our kitten, slipped out and away when Mary M opened the door to let Cyrus in. There was nothing she could do, so away she went! After a couple of hours, I was sitting in the livingroom and MM opened the door, and in she came like a shot, jumped on my lap as if to say, "I made it," another jump on the [foot]stool, tucked in her tail, and was instantly sound asleep! Since she proved she could come back, I suppose we'll let her out often.

January 5, 2012

Bad book

(1992 September 22)

I read such a poor book of Daddy's - Eight Questions, I think it was. I told MM to throw it, but she said no, she would hand it in at the new [used] book store downtown. I said in that case, erase "Poor" I had written at the top. Craig Rice [author].

January 4, 2012

Frost

(1992 September 22)

For the first time this year WRCO said, "Cover your plants, for it will frost tonight." Mary M, the sage, said, "Not the squash." I wonder if frost has reached you and what Sherry will say.

River rising

(1992 September)

A few strong showers cause rivulets to run into the Pine, the river near our house, and of course that rises. ... The Pine is high, and people may be evacuated; Geraldine thot she might, so did not come to work. ... Many people on shore to look at the river rising, and so I met Alice Premo (orchard) after many years.

January 2, 2012

Top cat

(1992 September)

This black kitten Annie is often in trouble. After MM went to the fair, I missed her. She was between the house door and the storm door. The big cat, Cyrus, helps take care of her. Won't let her out when he goes out.

Exit Annie

(1992 September)

One night I opened the door, and Annie, who is a black kitten, darted out, and MM hurt her arm trying to catch her from elbow to shoulder. Has been to doctor but still very tender. She does everything for me, and a good thing, as I can do less and less for myself - just tired. What I do pretty well is sleep.
