(1993 August)
I am very lonely now for some odd reason. I mentioned it to one of the "bosses" and she said there was nothing she could do for me, and so were many others, and besides she had a lot of work of her own to do. I really laughed - what an answer.

Entertainment
(1993 August)
A tall girl evidently in charge of entertainment came in to ask me if I'd like to go for a walk. I said, "Are you serious? In 90 degree weather?" "Oh," said she, "I was thinking we'd sit under the shade trees." I said that was where all the mosquitoes were, and she smiled and left, having tried. I was abed, too.

Sunday supper
(1993 August)
About 6 p.m. and I think I'll soon go to bed and read. Warm and inevitable. Sunday supper is usually a sandwich and a cup of soup like bouillion, dish of apricots for salad. About it.

Bella
(1993 August)
There is a large maid here, a little odd, Bella, I think. Many girls who come in exclaim over pretty plants on my window sill; so one day when she came in, I asked her if she would like to water them, and she said, O No - she never went around them.

Chapel
(1993 August)
It may be well for you to remember in this place I go downstairs to chapel Sundays at 4 p.m. to 4:30 [so don't phone me then]. To avoid standing, which is hard for me, I usually say yes to a wheelchair, and the chairs go on the elevator very well. It is a little like church - a hymn and a prayer and a sermon, and back up in the elevator, which I am not overly fond of.

Tension
(1993 August)
I am sorry to have to say I have the heebee-jeebees today. What brings on these spasms of nervousness and what causes them to leave, Heaven knows. It is utterly silly to think of your even calling when you get this, as by that time all will be OK. The nearest thing to this is how you felt, Skip, first days at Ripon. Utterly tense.

Get-well rimes
(1993 August 3, for Sherry)
Heard you were sick
Hope you get well quick;
Don't ride too fast
Nor work too long;
Try to stay healthy,
This is my song.

Don't ride too fast

Direct method
(1993 June 30)
There is a nice maid here who often answers my bell at night - an ample figure, the prettiest blue eyes ever, married and two little girls.... They are about two, and their father can be with them nights when she works. ... When she comes in, I teach her a word in French, which delights her. "Just rattle off a sentence quick," she said tonight, "so I can hear how it sounds." I want to give her a book, but she says no time. And as we talked, a bell rang for her to go.

Home again
(1993 June 30)
Jan came for me this morning about 9:30, and we went over to our house [33 Grove St.]. She threw up the garage door, and when we saw all the bird feed, we fed and watered the birds as MM did the last day of her life. We made tea and had coffee cake from the freezer. By the time she washed up, it was time to get me back here for dinner. A gorgeous day to be out! To feel the sun!

(1993 June 29)
That dear little horse! Lose no time but send the picture of M[erlyon] in Flight to some (horse) - or (animal) magazine for use on cover. Explain his age etc. If refused, keep on sending it out. So excellent all the way.

Rodeo parade
(1993 June 28)
Today Iwas taken out to see Rodeo parade. Sat in a folding chair across from Jim Keegan's and watched. It came from the park. Good to get out.

Summer clothes
(1993 May)
Jan was horrified when she brought all of my [summer] clothes over [from Grove St. to the Schmitt Home] in one big shopping bag. Is this all you have? How would I go shopping? By catalog, I guess. I am very easy on clothes and they last a long time.

Bed writer
(1993 May)
Grace was just here emptying waste baskets. She thot it very odd that I was writing a letter in bed. So I am. I feel you are wanting me to say something, but what can it be? Ask me.

We rememb ered our dead here going to chapel and lighting a candle for each. I should have called out the Martins' names and lit candles, and shall next year.

Pathos
(1993 May 20)
"The voice of the lawnmower is heard in the land." And under my window also. Met the poet [who wrote that line] - tall and thin and blind, pushes an empty wheel chair coocupied by his wife until her recent death.

Blind poet
(1993 May)
Well, another bit of news. I have been asked to write for a blind poet, published in Madison papers, name of Thompson. Margaret Scott said she helped him get his stuff copyrighted. I am anxious to meet him but can't imagine how it will be when ... he feels a poem coming on.

Clarification
(1993 May)
Meals are often a treat here. Remember [at our table] Ron, Bill, me, and The Duchess, all fairly deaf. I said to Ron, "What is the waitress's name?" - "Ron," he says. "I mean, what is her name? How is it spelled?" He says, to clarify all - "Ron" but "R-O-N" and "Ronald." I gave up. It was Marilyn.

Not glad
(1993 January 2)
Think I'll say goodbye, but not before telling you our "quartermaster" said, "Now Helen, you go in the bathroom and take this washrag and wash yourself all over." From my side of the curtain, I said, "Helen, aren't you glad you can?" Silence. Now to cast on a few stiches.

Tune me out
(1993 January 2)
Last night I had my radio on, lying in bed. Helen came and turned hers on. I said, "Helen, are you trying to put me out of business?" She came over to my bed and said, "Can't we each have ours on and get what we want at the same time? why not?"

Long reach
(1993 January 2)
As long as I entertain you, I'll go on. At supper, Phyllis, a big girl on my left, said, demonstrating, "Well, Folks, I got a hell of a long reach; so let me know if you need anything." No one did; so she sank back in her seat.

Dinnertime
(1993 February)
When it gets near meal time, I hear the clank of crutches and every other [such device] known to man. So sad, yet good they can go. I myself cannot go as well as I used to. Now 5:15 and time to lurk around the dining room until Dorothea says, "Ladies and Gentlemen, time to come to your evening meal."

Lost sweater
(1993 February)
The tam is coming along but not fast enough The ribbing over the ears is done and about an inch of the gray with that great big ball. But some day I'll send it with an alert it is coming. I'll never forget how Lawrence's sweater I knit was lost in the mail. I wrote I was sending it, but he didn't think it was then - thot later - so when we found out months had gone by. Address right and all, too.

(1993 February)
I saw my good mail but was too exhausted [after tour] to open it, but on awakening saw my fine soap dish - already in use. Now I'll tell Beverly not to clean it with her old rag, or else I'll put it under my pillow nights.
