(1986 September 19)
This herb ad caught my eye as I paged thru a new catalog which came in the mail this morning; and it made me wonder whether it would pay you to pot up a few herbs before the frost came and sell them at a grocer's. Perhaps the pots could be paper cups to save expense.

Felt
(1986 ?Fall)
Sherry, did I give you my assortment of felt? It would be good to put in the bottom of a good box for Sally's butterfly collection. Glued to bottom.

Out of focus
(1986 August 26)
I can't see TV very well with these glasses and have not yet heard new ones here. So to bed at 7 to read and listen to radio.

Bluejay
(1986 August 26)
I noticed the flag was up on my mailbox and went out to investigate. Saw a pretty plastic bluejay some kid yanked off of someplace and put in my box. After the rain I'll try to rig it up so passersby can see it. And owner take it.

Lemonade
(1986 May 13)
The Burnetts came Saturday.... Coming back [from lunch] I had the boys each take a lemon and make lemonade - their first experience (always in a MIX).

A funeral
(1986 - a loose note)
F. took cake to funeral [whose unstated] where it was eaten. Came home with other samples. The church packed and I in back row with man on left I helped with hymnal and prayer books. A woman sat down at table with me - asked my name so I asked hers. She is housekeeper for the Symons at their farm in English Ridge. News to me. I hear very beautiful place in Fall, written up often. Trees. You go on road parallel to one to cemetery and turn left. We'll have to check it out.

Pullover pushover
(1986 February 12)
I have solved my problem of how to make Lawrence's sweater - I don't see many boys on TV in cardigans; so think I'll make a pullover with round or V neck and long sleeves. A boy at Harvard had one on last night and looked well.

Many mansions
(1986 February12)
I have read again the paper's Christian views and find them very interesting. I used to think "many mansions" meant various Christian denominations, but yoga would depend on the thought behind it. I am reminded of Auntie Gertie [Lauson] sitting on our davenport with one long finger on a nostril of her long nose trying for levitation. Should have been so lovely if it had worked.

Portian downsized
(1986 June 28)
I called Bill and we went to see Gladys and Portia, asleep in a chair [at the Schmidt Home]. I stroked her arm to wake her and she did not know me at first. Her first words were: "I used to live in an apartment with three rooms and my own bath and took a shower every day but the woman in charge wanted the rooms and sent all my furniture off and put me down here with only this chair and lamp." I believe I have never seen such a sad sight in my life tho I know many worse in the world. When things like this happen, I always think if Daddy were only here, he would fix it, and he often put the fear of God into such people and made things right.

Crossstiches
(1986 June 28)
MaryCassidy brot her needlework to show me, counted cross stiches, which I have never attempted so fine, & told how she found a mistake MaryQueen of Scots made in her needlework hanging on a castle wall.

Drinking
(1986 October 1)
I sit at my desk and look out at my dying rose bush, my blooming chrysanthamum, yellow, and the butterflies still drinking nectar from the dying lilac, and think how nice it will be when you are here and we can drink beer together.

Bauermusik
(1986 October)
Today I had an odd spell related only because of its queerness. I woke about 7 cold and aching like arthritis all over. I put on a warmer quilt and turned on local radio for weather and got "Hee Haw is Good Enough for Me"- Bauermusik. About 8 got up for breakfast, glad I could walk. After early lunch, I slept an hour and woke fit as a fiddle. Odd.

Lost in the mail
(1986 March 30)
I would complain to the Postmaster General if I thot it wold do any good - about the poor service, but I fear my letter - or his reply would get lost in the mail.

Standing alone
(1986 September 16)
I am sorry about your friend's death [Garett Droppers], surely a shock to all. I got quite a shock some years ago when I realized my grandparents were gone, all my aunts and uncles, cousins, my husband, many of my friends, and I stood alone with my descendants.

Fine print
(1986 September 16)
Yesterday I received a request for a proxy for the Helmsman Fund from Marine [her bank] and I could no more read it sensibly than if it were in Hebrew. Someone in the family must know about these things or always be trotting to a lawyer who may not know either. I do these things blindly, prayerfully.

No veal
(1986 September 16)
Tell me now - what shall I cook for you when you are here? Make out a nice little menu and we shall see what we can do to please you. (PS - no veal in town) [essential ingredient for her meatloaf, Skip's favorite].

Eccentric old lady
(1985 April)
I must get this right off to you: Suzy [Hirschy] told her art teacher she was now staying with Polly Kay, to which he responded: "Polly Kay? Isn't she that eccentric old lady who lives in that big white house?" I have been hilarious ever since! But what do I do that is so odd? Perhaps go out little? Can you tell me? No 20 cats etc. etc.

Alaska bound
(1985 November 9)
[After a heavy snowfall, next-door neighbor] Suzy Hirschy came to see me wearing snow shoes and a back pack in which she had her new sleeping "mummy"-bag lined with red and also two heavy dictionaries to toughen her up for Alaska. I think she will enjoy her experience. She brot two Fortune Cookies and we had tea. Hers read: "You will set your foot on many lands" and that suited her to a T.

Authentic atmospheres
(1984 May 14)
I am eating chop suey from my Blue Willow China and looking at Cherry Blossoms. Is that Oriental enough for you? [Written on a card illustrated with a Japanese screen painting.] .... Friday morning a Boston Fern came into my life. It was a Mother's Day gift from Mary Margaret. Now the atmosphere in this old house is really authentic.

Harliquinade
(1982 October)
Well - here is Chapter I [of her Harlequin romance]. Please read it with pad & pen to jot down all reactions. And let me have them. Also - where do we go from here? I really don't have my story line developed very well. But now that we know Brown Bird & Annie Apple are engaged, I think C. Ford will see them (E. & Tom) together and be jealous. What form will this jealousy take? How will she know?

Pennywise
(1979 June 27*)
I had such an experience today with the cab. They went up to $1.50. Always more and such a short ride to town. I almost had to walk to town as I was so short of cash, but then two quarters came up and I counted all my change and it was $1.49. So on the ride home she asked for the other penny!

Root beer
(1979 June 27*)
It seems I had to do quite a bit of standing this afternoon [doing errands in town] .... I felt if I didn't sit on a chair soon I'd be sitting on the floor; so I went across to the Grill where I hadn't been in ages. Jean [Saloutos] was glad to see me and when I told her I wanted something cool like a root beer float, she filled a glass to the top with vanilla ice cream and on the side a full bottle ice cold of root beer! I am almost ashamed to tell you I relished every mouthful, but I did - how I held it all I can't say but surely will need no dessert for supper!

Agony aunt
(1978 ?June)
I wish I were there to put the soup on so it would be ready and hot when you got home. It seems all I can do is send good wishes. Bear up! You are not alone. Ann Landers says after you honestly do all you can, don't go around feeling guilty. We are all in control of our own lives. Er - somewhat.

O fudge
(1978 July 20)
This morning I woke up to thunks which could only be roofers. I dressed and got breakfast and at length went into my study. Wow. The light fixture smashed into 10000000 pieces, glass all over. I got workman to take the one down over Daddy's desk. Then Mr. Sears [the boss] came and while he stood behind me, the last piece came crashing down! I screamed and he said something like O fudge. Said he'd buy me a new one. Later Mike and I laid papers over everything and cleaned up the glass. Wow.

Dante debunked
(1978 July 9)
When I think about your new work on Dante, I am not too happy about it. I liked to think of Dante and Beatrice as two lovers from classic times. Now you will debunk them, and things may never be the same again. Beatrice will turn into a thought, and Dante just a thinker, and where will us romanticists be then? No one has got at Romeo and Juliet yet.

Heirlooms
(1978 April 5)
I will be glad to see you in May or June and wonder what you have your eye on here. You may have (1) work bench [Alfred Kay's], (2) the chest in attice [Aunt Olga's], (3) the octagon table with serpentine legs [also Alfred's], (4) license plates in garage. [All but the last taken and still prized.]
